MaggieRoseLee Dog class is FULL other other dogs! When we attend early, you situation never arises.

But when it does crop up we can still learn what to do to help get our pups to focus and pay attention to us.

Once you get a good foundation in ---> http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...s-puppies.html you are also getting a start on focus and attention to help your pup know YOU are fun and YOU are worth listening to. Rather than the current 'most exciting thing in town' being an oncoming dog.

huntergreen i kept a squeaky toy with me, usually in my top pocket and would give a squeak when ever my pup would loose focus on me. didn't take long to have a consistent perfect "heal".

Wetdog Get the book, "The Koehler Method of Dog Training". You can find it on Amazon.com used books. Start at the very beginning, Foundation Work. Do the exercise he gives you using the long line, exactly as he gives it to you.

Within 15 minutes if you are doing it correctly your dog will not take his eyes off of you.

Follow the book as it is presented, do NOT skip around or omit anything. Do exactly what the author tells you and within 4 months you will have a dog that you can take anywhere, under any conditions and never have a problem.

Harry and Lola It just takes time and consistency to achieve this. One of the best training exercises you can master and teach your GSD is to focus on you. Using a 'look' or 'watching' word, issue the command, at the same time use a high value treat such as hotdog meat or cooked chicken, wave it in front of his nose, bring the treat up to you eyes, the second he looks at you, mark it by saying 'yes' or 'good boy' and reward him with the treat. Practice this at home 10 times a day and everytime you are out walking. Eventually you will be able to get him to look at you for long periods.

When you are walking and approaching another leashed dog, do your focus command, pick up your pace - keep moving forward, even if he lunges at the other dog, just keep moving forward and command him to focus.

Also, I don't know how old he is but he looks like a juvenile and imo no longer needs to meet and greet other dogs, don't allow him the opportunity to meet strange dogs, train him in obedience and keep his mind and body active.

DJEtzel Look at that training will fix it. Search around.

Sadly, I've typed it too many times to re-type.

How to get my dog to ignore other dogs on walks?

Every time we walk and he sees another dog he barks at them! It's pretty embarrassing when my dog is barking like crazy and the other dog is just starring back like what the heck... It is not like my dog is being aggressive, because his tail is wagging too. I've tried to distract him with treats/toys but he doesn't care sometimes.
