shepherdmom I got what I was told was border collie/lab mix pup from the shelter, that grew up into a pit bull mix. He has been by far my easiest pup ever. Absolutely a little love and his mellow temperament seems to fit perfectly with my more aloof German Shepherds. He gives them a reason to relax and get goofy. Shepherds are so intense its nice to have a mellow guy as part of the pack.

DJEtzel You should probably choose the one you like the most, since a dog should be for you, not your dog.

Then you should choose a specific dog of that breed that matches your dog's temperament, play style, and personality.

Only after your current dog is well-trained to the point you'd like it.

Galathiel I would think of those three (but not when my dog was only 1) I would have to go with another GSD. I'm not sure that I would trust the others around cats (not that all GSDs can be trusted either). There is the potential with any of them to be high in prey drive. I would be sure to redirect that early on.

Getting another dog as a 'friend' isn't really a good reason. My opinion is you should only get another dog if you WANT it yourself.

Cassidy's Mom I think with a year old GSD you probably still have your hands full so it might not be the best time to get another dog. Unless he's already practically perfect there's still plenty more training you can do with him before even thinking about adding to the pack. And when you're sure you are ready for another dog, the breed is much less important than the temperament of the particular dog/s you're considering. I've had 5 GSDs over the past 28 years and they've all been such individuals that's it's pretty much impossible to make generalizations about them as a breed.

Also, why do you think he needs a friend?

Saphire You couldn't get two more opposite dogs than a husky and GSD. Huskies are beautiful dogs but not for everyone, they run like the wind and have NO recall as mentioned above.

Chip18 Of the three I'd lose the Husky, go to a Husky board and look up recalling my dog!

On your list my choice would be a pit puppy, you sidestep the rank drive thing with the GSD. With good leadership "rank " drive should not be a problem. But I've seen it with my GSD and never had it with my Bully guys as an "issue" with my Bully guys.

Your results may differ from mine,

I'd probably go with a male GSD so you'll have the same temperament.
If you have cats, then I'd advised having the "friend" be a puppy.
thanks you for the advice.
