Chip18 Just saw this on the "Dog Whisper" create a positive association with the smell of the cleaner stuff. Treats by the bottle or on your hands, something positive associated with the smell of the stuff.

SunCzarina If you're squirting Epi Otic in his head, no wonder he hates it.

Otto has cruddy ears. I think it's how furry his ears are, dirt gets trapped in there. The vet swabs him twice a year and tests it since he did have quite a few infections as a young dog. Hasn't had one in a couple years because I clean them weekly. No he doesn't like it but I bribe him well.

I use cotton pads from the drugstore make up department. Not balls, those are hard to control, the pads for removing make up. Put a few in a bowl, douse them with solution and wipe the ear out.

Their ears go in like an L so there's no danger poking the ear drum sticking your finger down as far as you can to wipe the crud out.

graciesmom what solution are you using to clean his ears?

Trooper11 Thanks for the reply... he doesn't have an ear infection, but he's had one and for preventive care I clean them only about once a month. All I do is squirt the solution in his ear and massage. I then wipe with a cotton ball. I feel really bad that he's this scared. I'm so close with him, I don't want this to affect our bond.

Sunflowers How do you clean his ears, and how often?

Harry and Lola Does he get ear infections? Or is there a lot of dark colour wax always there? If you find you need to clean his ears often, then maybe look at why. My Lola always had ear infections and build up of wax, she was always getting antibiotic drops and ear cleaners until we found out she has a thyroid issue and since being treated for thyroid she no long has wax build up and raw itchy ears any more.

If your little one is this terrified, maybe leave the cleaning for a week or two then when he is very relaxed, say almost asleep, put some of the solution onto a cotton wool ball and gently clean his ears, do it slowly and carefully and give him a reward when you are finished. He is either in pain or something has happened to make him freak out, so you are going to have to spend a bit of time building his trust and confidence again with you putting things in his ears.

7 month old has serious anxiety with ear cleaning...

Trooper will be 7 months on the 1st, I've been cleaning his ears since I've had him at 10 weeks. He is always been difficult about it. However, tonight, he freaked out to the point he was shaking uncontrollably by just seeing the bottle of solution; as if he was having an anxiety attack. And then he ran and hid behind our living room chair. Is this normal behavior? His ears need cleaned, but I also don't want it to have that affect on him. I feel horrible now... what should I do?
