Some one here pointed it out but an issue "I" had was the front door. It doesn't matter if you go out first or second but it does matter to the dogs which one of "them" goes out first!

I always used the old "Le Mans" type start..running start from a sit every dog for himself!
Yeah that didn't work out to well in the long run!

gsdsar Honestly, it sounds like Sora got called on being a jerk and behaving innapropriately. The way he is acting now is as expected when a younger dog gets a firm correction. If angel is not obsessing, and it does not sound like she is, I would not be worried.

I would still do with them separate, but I would also start walking them together. Get them to bond that way.

Sora, is young. He needs to be taught how to behave. She did it this time, you need to do it from here on out. Do not allow him to be a pest. Make him behave.

Day 2 of new dog... have we botched it already?!

Today was the second day of Angel, a 5 year old spayed GSD, being with us. We have another dog named Sora who is a 1 year old unaltered GSD mix.

Angel and Sora are kept separate when we are not home and/or unable to supervise them together. When I got home from work today, I took them out individually and spent one-on-one time with them playing fetch and doing some basic obedience work. Angel has very poor impulse control, and has the tendency to want to snatch things out of my hand. She thinks it's her way or the highway!

After playing fetch, I fed them both separately near the baby gate so that they could associate each other with good things. After eating and they had settled down, I decided to give them some time together. Sora, our boy, is completely smitten and obsessed with her. He follows her wherever she goes. Well, he decided to try to mount her, and that's when all heck broke loose. She was NOT having that. A fight broke out between them--mostly verbal with a ton of noise. A stern no broke them up, and I separated them immediately.

After they calmed down, I decided to try to give them some time together again. Now, Sora is completely wary of her. You can tell he wants to run up to her and hang out, but he hangs back. There was a point where she stretched out on the floor, and he wouldn't even walk past her to get to his water dish. Angel ignores him completely and does not attempt to initiate play at all. Since she has poor impulse control, she also tends to snatch toys right out of his mouth. I have since picked up all of the toys after witnessing her doing this.

Now, I know, I know. It's only day 2, and I realize these things can take lots and lots of time! This is my first time introducing two dogs, so I am not sure if compatibility is typically 'love at first sight' or 'we will like each other when we feel like it, darn it!' We are doing a trial run with Angel, so if she's not a good fit, she will go back to her owner. She seems to be a great dog for the most part, other than her lack of impulse control (today she snatched a Kong out of my husband's hand and nipped his hand in the process, as an example.)

Have I already completely botched their chance at bonding? Is there anything I should be doing differently? I do practice NILIF with Sora, and I practice it with her as well.
