wyoung2153 I have known people that have done that but IMO it's not necessary so long as someone is there with your pup and can watch him. The problem arises when people leave their puppy out and it potties places and chews things. But don't feel bad about putting him in the crate of you guys just need a break. Puppies can be exhausting.. and thats a good time to teach that crate isn't a bad thing

Ok was just making sure. The guy I bought him from told me to keep him in there for like 80 percent of the day.

Airman1stclass So my wife has the day off and she is letting our puppy stay out of the crate because he has pottied outside and she sais he isn't leaving her side and being really good. Should the puppy still be crated? Or it is ok for him to be outside of his crate for a couple hours straight.

If you want to play outside, I would make a clear differentiation. Outside, potty. Back inside for a few minutes, then outside(to a different area) to play. If possible, in the beginning, play out front, potty in the back (hehe like a mullet). Do not confuse potty area with play area.

Did something very similar with Titan and it worked pretty well. I leashed him when we went out to potty. I used a command "go potty." If he went he got praise and off leash for play time. If he didn't, back inside, in crate. Repeat. he knew he had to potty to play. It also came in handy for road trips. A lot of dogs I know, and have owned, wouldn't potty on command or go while you had them on lead. That is no issue for this guy.

If they are loose, I would have them tethered to you. Can't be out of your sight.
