positive progress with my 2 1/2 yr old shepherd
hey all, as some might recall Ive posted on here a few times about aggression with my dog.. He was really aggressive towards anyone but family and eventually ended up biting someone.. I thought it would be guaranteed that we would have to put him down by request of police or person bit or dog catcher whomever it may be...
Luckily the lady that got bit was someone by total coincidence works at the vet in the next town that we take him to, and she had many interactions with him and thought he was a very good dog. Well we had the cops come by to see the situation of him breaking off a leash but when the cop came in and saw him in his kennel, she said he wasn't barking or growling and when I told him to stop when he was whinning she said, well he listens well I believe this was a misunderstanding.. we had the dog catcher come he said he was a very smart and well mannered dog obviously just protective..
next stop was the gs trainer around our area.. He said he was one of the smartest and very positive "aggressive" gs that he has met said work with him he will grow.. all this took place at around yr /yr half old. (past story pup was abandoned on side of road found him very malnourished, had worms and was very afraid.)
fast forward to now.. I have worked with him, fenced in backyard and he has grown vastly from where he was, still protective but we don't shut door to kitchen from backroom because he sits there and doesn't enter without one of us saying allowed to.(which he never used to do anytime someone came had to shut door or he'd run in barking) he never gets in trouble and gets put in his kennel, when we go for walks he VERY rarely even looks at other people or dogs out and never barks or growls.. we have got him down to 2-3 barks when someone is at the door then he just whines to want to come and meet them!! we can allow him in the house when we have people over because he is just in awe when he gets to meet new people and see people he has met..
We previously had roughly 6 people that are over here quite often that met him before and wouldn't even go near him, now we leave kitchen door open he sits at kitchen and waits for them to come out and they pet him and interact with him.. we had about 8 people over for Christmas and we allowed him to come in and meet them surprisingly wasn't afraid of new interaction of a big crowd, a little nervous at first but I was told by dog trainer don't force interaction let him get comfortable so they didn't pay attention to him let him smell them then they were best of friends..
Last time we were at the vet, he was still very scared there which he has had shots, and he did cut his leg and they had to clean up cut and he was in pain so I can understand that but vet said being around him hes a lot calmer then before and he was very much more open to interact with her..
This is great turn around from what the situation was, and he has grown to be a great dog!! we back onto a school yard and he sits out there and watches the kids play on recess, he still barks at passing dogs but ill be fine with that.. Never give up on your dog he will grow and be a phenominal companion, I work midnights and my wife says the dog will sit at top of stairs and watch me put stuff in truck and get warmed up then when I eventually leave he gives 2 light barks like hes saying goodbye and goes down to his couch to sleep.. haha wonderful breed always loved them but they are that much more impressed me first hand!!
