We have 2-3 dogs that we have done this to at my clinic. It is done under sedation only. And generally it because the dog is very aggressive during nail trims and sedating a dog every 4 weeks for a nail trim is dangerous. So they come in much less frequently and have us take them back far.
I hate it, it's one of the few things I refuse to do. But I understand the need in some dogs.

|Bequavious||I've heard of people doing that to dogs they intend to show because their nails are generally clipped quite short, and it makes the quick recede faster than if you just clip them everyday without cutting into the quick. I never knew of anyone personally who did it though, so I wonder if it's a bit of a carry over from pre-grinder days when it was harder to get really close to the quick without cutting it? In any case, I doubt there's any reason for it these days, especially for a pet dog who's not sedated.|

If you WANT to teach a dog to be really bad for nail trims that would be the way to do it.
I know of a Dobie breeder who did that and ALL of her dogs were bad for nails.
Some people are just dumb as rocks.

|Shade||No I wouldn't allow that, the only time I've heard of a vet or tech doing that personally is while the dog is already under sedation.|

Trimming nails so short they bleed
I have just had the third person I know tell me that their VET trims their dogs nails so short they bleed (deliberately) and then packs them with something or other, probably cornstarch. Am I alone in thinking that this is cruel and inhumane? Why in the world would someone, let alone a vet, do that? To save the client money? Not only would I not allow anyone to do that to my dog, but I would never again associate with a professional that would have the gall to suggest it! I told my co-worker how I feel, but showed restraint by stopping short of suggesting that she have her manicurist do that to her!
