Well I got him in to the vet today for a health exam.
I had a picture of his wormy poo and the vet said they are tape worms and so we got the dose for that and did another dose of the round worms.
Vet said he is very skinny and I had to explain his background and let him know that I had only had him a week and he was improved from when I got him! He has gained 2 pounds since being with me!
I will take him next week to get his second set of shots
I was going to start an obedience class with him next friday but the vet assistant insisted I should NOT take him anywhere until he has had his full round of shots and that will be another month!

|Eiros||Sounds like such an improvement!! I think once this health stuff is cleared up and he gets through the normal puppy bratiness he's going to turn out really awesome! Sounds like you're doing a great job... cant wait to see some update pics soon (wink wink)|

Time for an update I think.
Darius has been with us over a week now and is doing well. We had to travel up to our house in another state about 8 hours away to do some work and get it ready for new tenants and Darius went with us. He did great! he doesn't seem to like getting in the truck but he is getting better! He had his first outing to Home depot and was pretty shy at first but then started to realize it wasn't that bad!
we got him brushes but he doesn't seem to like them! He is warming up to treats! He used to shy away from you and didn't seem to know what treats were, now he knows!
We are back at our home we live in now and he is dealing with cats again! He is doing well, he wants to play with the cats SOOOOOO bad but they don't like him!
He has worms pretty bad, I discovered them while we were at the other house. I need to get him into the vet. If I can't get him in today I will go buy a home dewormer and give that to try to help for the weekend, they are pretty bad!
He has lost 3 teeth so far! Can't wait for teething to end! He wants to chew EVERYTHING!! His ears are weak right now and flop every now and then but I am pretty sure I remember that may be due to teething so I am not too worried right now.
He has learned the stairs! He is still clumsy on them but he figured out how to go up and down, sometimes he comes down a bit fast in his excitement and I fear he is going to fall but he makes it without breaking his neck yet!
Well that's the update so far. He is turning out to be a pretty good dog! Thank you for all the encouragement!

Congrats on getting this pup out of a bad situation. He may surprise you with his resilience.
It sounds like he's ready to learn from other dogs, so after he's cleared by a vet and fully vaxed (try to give the vax 2 weeks to take effect, before he's in situations where he might need them), getting him into a puppy class with some stable, well-adjusted will be terrific. I would be a little hesitant about having him out with other dogs at classes (even in a pen) until you get your vet's clearance (the worry isn't just what he might catch if his immunity is low, but also what he might spread, since there are likely many unknowns in his care history). As exciting as it is to have a new pup, I just want to encourage caution, while you wait for a vet's "all-clear."
Given his circumstances, I think I wouldn't wait a week for that vet check up. I'd ask to have the vet run a fecal float test ASAP (very inexpensive) to look for intestinal worms. That's pretty routine with a rescue pup. Some worms (esp. whipworms) can really do a number on young pups, but the worms are very easy to treat.

|Melissa98409||Oh how awesome! They are so resilient, aren't they?! It's heartwarming to hear that he is coming out of his shell and being a normal puppy.|

That's fantastic! I can't lie...I enjoy coming to the forum to read and learn but I do a little dance when I am reassured (daily) that mine is not the only little terror it's a little scary that this is just baby terror and it's going to get worse before it gets better.
I'm so happy you rescued him and I can't wait to read about your adventures together!

Well it's like he woke up this morning and discovered he is in fact a GSD puppy! HOLY COW WHAT DID I WISH FOR!!!!
What a crazy terror! He still cowers alot when we try to pet him but he is getting better. I took him last night to my daughters agility class so he could see, he stayed in a pen but he was exposed to all the people and other dogs and I think it worked wonders on him, he didn't get in trouble or hurt for being curious about things and he started to get excited at the end.
He is being a mischevious little devil now! His poo is firming up, it was a runny mess but is better now. I will be taking him to the vet in another week or so to get a microchip and check up. His petco shot record says get the shots boosted on the 22nd of March but I will bring that in to the vet and make sure that is right.
For now we are playing and doing so much better! I am glad he is so young and didn't have to long to deal with a less then ideal life.
He is going to be on the small side I think but that is okay, he will be a good friend! I went and got the box that had all my dog stuff in it and found the hiking packs, and all the hiking stuff and the sledding harness and tracking harness, the possibilities will be endless if I can get this toy drive going!!
Well I'm off to go play!!

sounds like he's doing better, so glad you got him out of that awful situation
Tho he is obviously settling in, I would get a fecal atleast to the vet asap..
And yes, I'd feed him 3x a day, small meals to get his system going.. Keep us updated!
