He looks like a purebred GSD; there's nothing wrong with his coat, the color is called "sable", which is different from the typical black and tan saddle markings you think of when you think of a GSD.

However, if his mother was a black and red saddleback, and his father was mostly black with some tan (bicolor), it's impossible for them to have a sable puppy. So there may be a different father. Probably still purebred GSD though. He's very handsome.

I had heard the same thing and started researching since my Maddie has the same cream underside. I found reference to is as their base coloring with "bright points".

Nope, not true, some do have white patches like this. People saying this are probably only familiar with Black and Tan gsds.
