pyratemom While I do use my yard for short training sessions, I usually walk younger dogs when I get them in various places other than around the home. I want them to experience other smells and places. After they are more confident I walk them in my neighborhood. My dog classes were always near a place where we could walk in the woods on the Key deer trails and that was a fun place to walk and sniff. I don't do training with puppies while on a casual walk except to teach them to stop when I say for traffic or whatever. Luring will work to encourage a puppy to continue on past whatever their barrier is but be careful not to force it and make the pup more scared. Make your training session fun and always end on a positive note.

AugustGSD My dog is over a year old and still will not walk in the neighborhood. He will walk to the stop sign at the corner and won't go any further. I used to be able to walk him, even though he pulled and pulled. Finally, I quit walking him because it was just stressing him out. He'd pull so hard that he would be choking for breath. I do blame a few of my neighbors because he was just a little puppy when I got him, and there are people here that do not keep their dogs in their own yard. Several times we had a large Weinmarner (I know its spelled wrong) approach us barking and growling. Another time someone's dog jumped their gate, a gate that was entirely too low because this dog was an excellent jumper. Though the dog did not do anything other than try to play, my 3 month old pup at the time did not find this fun. Now he plays in the backyard, and runs around at top speed without a care in the world. I can take him to the store with me, or to people's homes and he is okay walking there, so I think he just doesn't like it here.

MaggieRoseLee I always have issues walking my young puppies in the neighborhood. They prefer the house yard.

Since I don't like dragging them I use the yard to poo/pee and to exercise them I pack the dogs in the car and go somewhere new. Never had problems walking them then.

PUPPY classes also help with all this, gaining confidence in leaving the 'known'.

David Taggart Introduce pleasure into your walks. Do not feed before, and train her during the walks, the rewards for some simple commands should be really tasty treats. Take a ball with you, a rope, or some other toy. Make her busy, she should learn to concentrate on you only.

Tratkins Mine is 11 weeks too! I have had to lure him with some delicious treats. Once he gets about 100 feet from our driveway, he is good and goes along with me, but those first few feet are the toughest! He has gotten better with time. I have him on a long 10 foot lead so I will walk that far away and if I bend down and hold out a delicious treat, he will always come to me (lots of praise when he gets to me!) Then repeat until I get past neighbor dogs. (btw, once we have passed that 100 ft, I keep the leash super short right by me). We want the focus to be on us when we go for walks (not on all the other distractions). Hopefully that helps!

Scared to go for walk

11 week old is scared to go for walks. She has been barked at by neighbor hood dogs now it seems like she can smell them when we go past or approach there yard and she just wants to pull away. Like ive read her i just sand there till she settles down but that never realy happens.
