Nigel Glad to hear he's on the mend, sucks having them get injured, especially not knowing what actually took place.

*Beowulf* All better. Only drained one more time after the last post and now the swelling is completely gone and the area feels healed. Meds continue for another 4 days and we should be free and clear.

Thanks for the input everyone. I kept the follow ups going in case they could help another person who runs into the same issue.

*Beowulf* No they couldn't tell but mixed news again today. I noticed a red bump right by the corner of his eye when i felt it it felt like a healed over tooth wound. Now when we got this pup his dad had bite barked at him and hit him with his teeth cutting him in that exact spot. is it possible this has been a festering infection for 5 weeks? possible i suppose odd how it showed up fast.

Anywho another hot compress and the red bump opened up and drained completely. very fast it was gross. it seemed to have filled a little again so I did another hot compress and it drained again. not puss like before but more like milky blood. Gross eh.
I'll keep the meds going and keep draining it. the vet said the fact its cleaning out like that and it getting less infectious looking is a good sign.

SummerGSDLover Aw poor guy. Glad you had a vet look at it. Did they say what the infection was from? Kind of weird for a bump to just show up and have infection inside (pus).

*Beowulf* Here is him shaved and you can see where they took the sample.

*Beowulf* Well the vet finally showed up and said pretty much the same thing a hematoma. put some ice on it and watch it. So I said if I never told you he hit his head what would you do? they said they would take a needle and take a sample to see what is in it so I said well what are you waiting for haha.
so they shaved his bump and did... and it was nothing but puss, yay infection.

So anti inflammatory's and a few pain killers. put a hot compress on it and it released....Yuck and smelled like death. light brown infection, little to no blood. They said with the meds and cleaning it out like that should be good by saturday/sunday and if not trip #2 to see the vet.

Sp00ks I've had one but not the dog.

SusiQ Sounds like a hematoma, which is a fancy name for a big raised bruise - they can take a while to completely go away. Periodic ice packs (a bag of frozen peas works great) may help as well.

*Beowulf* The question wasn't should I go to a vet.. I will be going to a vet. thats an obvious decision. My closest vet is over 4 hour drive.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen from rough play or an accident around the house.

Vet called back and had me do a few things and take some more pictures, she will be getting a sample with a needle i guess. So I guess its a wait and see at this point she said i looks like he hit the edge of something like my coffee table, etc. since there is no pain, blood, cut, puncture, illness and is placed wrong for and dental or eye problem. Also a little good news, the "goose egg" is only half the size now, getting smaller by the hour and causing no pain.

doggiedad with a lump the size of a goose egg i think you should go to
the Vet or E-Vet immediately.
