LUDLOW — A 40-year-old Ludlow man, charged with brutally beating his pet dog and then leaving it for dead in a snow-covered field, was arraigned Friday in Palmer District Court on a charge of felony cruelty to animals.

Ricardo M. Costa, of 31 Acorn Lane, denied the charges at his arraignment. He was ordered held in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or a $25,000 personal surety. He is due back in court on March 4.

According to police, Costa grew angry that the dog, a year-old Pomeranian named Scrunchie, defecated in the house. He is accused of repeatedly hitting the dog with a pair of metal pruning shears, causing serious injuries, including a fractured skull. Thinking the dog was dead, he then dumped the body in the snow near Red Bridge Road in Wilbraham, police said.

Exactly.

I just can't understand how or why people do such terrible things to defenseless animals. It's sickening.

LUDLOW - A Ludlow man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty Thursday night in connection with the beating of his pet dog and then dumping the body in a snow-covered field near Red Bridge State Park, police said.

The dog, a year-old Pomeranian, was found alive hours later and rushed to the Boston Road Animal Hospital in Springfield, said police Sgt. Daniel Valadas. Its condition was not known late Thursday but the injuries are considered extensive, he said.
Both the 31 Acorn St. residence where the dog was beaten and the snowbank where the dog was found each had signs of “a lot of blood and hair,” he said.
Arrested was Ricardo M. Costa, of 31 Acorn St., Valadas said. He is charged with felony cruelty or maiming of an animal.
Valadas said according to the initial investigation, Costa beat the dog with a large pair of metal shears because he was angered to find it had defecated inside the house and no one else had cleaned it up.
Police learned of the incident at about 7 p.m. when someone called the station to report that they heard of the beating from a friend of a friend, Valadas said.
Officers interviewed Costa at his home, and he voluntarily brought them to the field on Red Bridge where he had disposed of its body at around 9 p.m. It was not until then that officers found the dog was still alive.
The state law regarding cruelty to animals says anyone who cruelly beats, mutilates or kills an animal may be punished by up to five years in state prison, 2 years in a county jail or a fine of $2,500. The law specifies that it makes no difference if the person accused of cruelty owns the animal or not.
The investigating officers were officer Brian Shameklis and detective Allison Metcalfe.
Costa was in custody at the Ludlow Police Station Thursday night. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Palmer District Court.

Glad they got this ****.
