stmcfred Seems like the last year or so there have been a huge increase in the number of pit bull and pit bull mixes here (NE Ohio). It use to be everything under the sun was a shepherd or lab mix.

The term "Pit Bull" actually encompasses a wide variety of dogs, including the APBT, Staffie, Bully, etc and doesn't exactly have a specific breed attached. Pretty much anything with the bully look is considered a pit bull. The differences are mainly in their structure, but they're so widely exploited by BYB it is literally impossible to really understand what is what, who came from who, and whatever the "lines" mean.

I looked into them one time, and after I realized how dog aggressive prone they are I changed my mind. However, you will NOT believe the "breeders" I came across. And the different "types". It is mind boggling.

The best breeder ( I think ) who actually exemplifies the real APBT is Caragan Kennels, if you're interested in seeing that the breed is SUPPOSED to look like lol. Now look at the "bully".

Okin I doubt a lot of people around here or the SPCA could tell the difference between a Staffordshire and Pitbull. I wouldn't be surprised if some are just mutts with the right mix to look like a Pit.

For some reason Pit is one of the most popular dogs here in the city. I wonder if the reason so many are labled that way is that it attracts people to adobt them because they know how popular they are? The most common mixes I hear about are Pit/Rott, Pit/Lab and Pitt/Rott/Chow. I think people want tougher/bigger Pits but they still want a pit. Seems like they really want a bull mastiff or cane corso.

They were actually illegal here which lead to a lot of bad breeding and people mixing pits so they can say it wasn't a pit when stopped. I don't believe they are illegal anymore.

I always liked this test http://www.pickthepit.com/

Kaimeju I think it's that way most places. Ours is border collies, pits, and chi mixes. There is a substantial Hispanic population with free-ranging dogs, and we're also surrounded by ranchers, so that explains it.

SPCA site must say something about where I live

Usually once a week or so I look at the SPCA site where I live to see if there are any GSD's on there. Everytime I look almost every dog on there is listed as a "pit bull mix". Today there are 45 dogs on there 37 listed as a pit bull mix and at least 4 of the ones that are not obviously have some pit or something close in the mix.
