Arlene/Archer It's the law here, a knee jerk legislation brought in with little thought or evidence to appease the uneducated- S.I. No. 123/1991 - Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991.

AKIRA3 Nice pic.
Just curious, how and why are they restricted?

Arlene/Archer I certainly don't want to put my dog in danger - and I don't want the swans to be put in danger either which why I've trained him not to make a nuisance of himself around them. I don't know how many loose dogs I've watched charging these poor birds, barking up a storm when they rest on the banks, with owners hollering in vain.
I want my GSD to be a model dog when out in public, and part of that means training him how to behave himself around every situation we will come across in the city. It's super important especially here in Ireland where GSDs are restricted, that they are well trained and polite. But I appreciate the warning on mating season and will be extra vigilant.

wolfy dog Be extremely careful with these swans. Last year a man was killed by one. They are extremely aggressive in their mating season, which is just around the corner. I know them from my time in Europe and you don't want to put your dogs in danger.

Quinnsmom Congrats on the great training! Those swans are a huge temptation. Good boy, Archer!

Swan Audience.

Archer and I were out on a 12k run today, so at around 7k we stopped for a cool down in the canal. As usual the swans came straight for us, hissing and complaining like a bunch of super pretty thugs.
I've been training Archer to ignore them when they're on the banks, and have taught him a 'go wide' command that is now almost 100% perfect. And for water, I just expect him to be neutral. He can look, but no barking, lunging or posturing. Blow me, the training is working. Observe.

He had a look, hopped back onto the bank when he was done and off we went again. Not bad at all for a dog who won't even be two until March ( so proud of him), and it hardly took any time to train at all.
