erfunhouse I'm going to err on the side of caution this time. I'm going to continue the meds, and allow him to rest outside of the crate and give them periodic breaks in the crate with treats/kongs and rotate to leashed OB training outside.

I think I really freaked out because we lost our other shepherd to DM. Granted he was 13 and lived a fantastic life with us for nearly 9 years. I feel as if I didn't know enough about GSDs to prevent it. I am doing a 180 with Sabo and Kia...learning what is best and implementing this. I mean, I fed my other dog Pedigree his entire life...what if I had better managed his diet and exercise routines and he didn't develop DM???

Either way, I think I have massive anxiety regarding our last GSD and so I"m being overly cautious this time around.

Sunflowers That is great. Are you really going to do the steroids for three weeks?
Do you think maybe he just got sore muscles from all that exercise he wasn't used to doing?

Hans got a sore shoulder when he was about that age. The vet wanted to put him on Rimadyl. I tossed the Rimadyl in the trash and kept him crated for about a week. Gave some Arnica. That was all he needed to recover.

erfunhouse He seems to be doing MUCH better. Got up and out of the crate with no problems! It's awesome! I feel better about the whole situation. Kia is trying to be a good sister and do "lazy play" instead of running around.

Still resting. No stress. I feel so much better though!

Blanketback Aww, poor Sabo. At least now you can rest easy, and rule out HD.

That happened to my pup too, after a playdate. I was very worried and called my vet, to see if I could bring him in ASAP. The receptionist was the go-between, and my vet asked what his symptoms were. There was a pregnant pause when I said, "He can't jump on the bed!" Now I get it, she was waiting for me to say he was limping, or wouldn't put weight on a leg....lol....they said rest him for 48 hours and bring him in on Monday if he wasn't any better. Poor guy, just from running like a maniac with his buddy. They can overdo it when they're having such a blast.

Do rethink that.

How is he doing today?

erfunhouse Gretchen- my boy is one of the "larger" shepherds, and because he's a hyper puppy still I figured that he needed a TON of exercise...I"m beginning to rethink that. He's from show lines so he isn't as "intense" as the DDR/working line dogs...doesn't have the drives. He will play sure, he loves his tug of course, he is a GSD after all. I do believe however, that I overdid it.

I think he is one of those that prefers the mental exercise to the physical. Kia however, is definitely one that would be a great runner. She is lean and fast as all get out!

Trcy- the "gold" one? COSTCO!!! LOL! I absolutely hate it, think it's ugly. LOL, but it's soft and thick! The one our old dog had that we let Sabo use was torn up by Sabo. I was rather sad, but Metro never used it (was used by ferrets and the cats while Metro looked on)...it was a testament to his kind soul. I figured had Metro been alive while Sabo was destroying it he would have laughed a doggie laugh and just watched.

trcy We have the same dog bed.

I hope Sabo heals quickly.

Gretchen Glad he's basically OK.
We call that laying down mouth fighting "lazy play"

Molly is just finishing a 4 week exercise restriction period. She was allowed on leash only for (2) 30 minutes walks per day. We thought she had recovered well from a TPLO surgery. Her surgical leg is fine, but the "good" one was acting up. It happened after a 3 mile walk, which ended up at the beach. She did some digging and half way through the walk we stopped at an off leash dog park. She got to play hard for a good 10 minutes. We rested her, but 2 weeks later, limping again. It was like you described. No limping during our walk or when we came home, but after rest for a couple hours.

I'm wondering if this breed just does not need as much exercise than I think they need. Our previous dog was GSD/Aussie, she never had soft tissue issues/injuries. I hope Sabo feels better soon and things will heal on their own. We still have to go back for an ortho eval.

erfunhouse Laying down and mouth fighting since he can't run around. The vet said this was Ok. He knows crate rest when you have two young ones (and Sabo had seperation anxiety when away from her) is hard. When they get rowdy it's kongs and crates.
