Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, john and his friend sally both spotted a dalmatian inside a truck with sirens, headed to put out a fire. State what the 2x4 is made of.

MaggieRoseLee We use crates because we LOVE our dogs. Used properly it's their safe haven and den. They will love it. We can use it at night to housebreak them (keeping it beside our bed) and assure they don't get into trouble destroying items.

If there is a better and easier way to do something that my pup loves... then I'm all for it! --->

Also, having a good PLAN in place is key. The hours a day you'll be spending with the puppy that used to be free time Puppy classes make it much easier to assure you start up the socialization and appropriate training.

Good luck! I'm getting a new puppy in March and will be right behind you. Already getting my crates back from where I loaned them and trying to figure out where/when I'll be going to those puppy classes!

Just to clarify for doggiedad, I intended to use the back room as a puppy crate while we are away, although it is bigger than a crate so I'm not sure if it will be too big. Otherwise he will be with the family playing and interacting all other times.
I would still put him in a crate (after crate training). You'll be surprised what he can damage if you are gone and he get stressed or bored; dry wall, door and window posts, windows, curtain, blinds etc.
I have a room like that and that's where the crates are. But they can see me in the living room from there. Crates are not useful just for the home but everywhere you go you have his home-away-from-home with you. I would not raise a pup without crate and crate train every dog that enters the house hold, no matter their ages.
Have fun with your pup.

KathrynApril He is soo cute!!! When it comes to my boy while there are the standards like bowls/crate/collar/leash. The one thing aside from all the regular necessities is my flirt pole. It is the best/fastest way to tire out my boy. Especially in these -30 windchill days were walking on concrete is just not feasible.

doggiedad puppy class, training, socializing, private
lessons or group ( i perfer private lessons
the in the begining), food and water bowls,
good food and treats, fresh food, collar, leash,
toys, crate.

you have a small room in the back of the house.
are you planning on keeping your pup in that room?
a pup needs to be with it's humans.

LOL

lindadrusilla Probably a crate then for training where to eliminate perhaps? Big enough to get up & turn around but too big that he can pee on one side & rest on the other...

Food and water bowls.

Harry and Lola He is just so gorgeous, I could squeeze him

Gosh, what do you need, cheap collar (they grow quickly), lead, bed, toys, car harness, all wormer, heart wormer, flea & tick prevention, bush, the list can go on and on.

Also, he will have those puppy needle teeth and once he starts using you as a chew toy to relieve himself, it is murder on your hands, feet, ankles etc. I have had great success with putting Vicks Vapourub on the things you don't want him to chew such as you! The smell is so strong and yucky to them, that they avoid it and you can direct his need to chew to something appropriate.
