Chicagocanine My dogs always ignored my rats. Also my sugar gliders but I didn't bring them out when she was in the room because the gliders are so fast and jumpy. The sugar gliders used to play "hide and seek" with my cats through the cage bars!
I've had lots of other small animals too, but mostly that was before I had my GSD (I had other dogs). My Golden Retriever loved all my critters.

llombardo I have had them in the past, I think they make great pets. No one my house thought the same Based on my dogs personalities they wouldn't hurt them on purpose, but my oldest would attempt to pick it up to keep it by her . If they were in their own habitat it would no problem at all.

Blanketback They are awesome little creatures! Very much like dogs - although I have a young female here now that acts like a little monkey, she can fling herself from one side to the other, catching the bars. Crazy antics, lol. I think she'd have been way too distracting for my pup when I brought him home, lol.

I was using "Leave it"/redirecting to keep my puppy away from most things (shoes, plants, etc) but when it came to the rat cage I actually interrupted eye contact instead of physical contact. And then slowly he was able to watch them, then get closer, then give a sniff. Now he's great with them. They love watching him chase his toys past their cage, lol.

wolfy dog Ha, ha, they are dogs in a rodent body. The clicker trained one took the clicker to her nest after the first training session as a valuable resource; carrying the clicker, head held high and hopping onto the ramp into the Ferret Nation cage. They are hilarious.
I am hoping that DD, the new pup, can be a trusted friend with them. Will definitely work hard on that.

misslesleedavis1 I had one, i called her Emily. She liked the dogs she would chatter away to them while hanging out on my shoulder, the dogs (though they never got close) would ignore her. She loved to take things from my dresser and hoard them in her little toliet paper roll home.

Blanketback I have pet rats but I don't let them play with my dogs. I do house them in a nice "Critter Nation" and they're always chewing up their towels to get a better view of the dogs though, lol. I'm pretty paranoid that if I let them get too close to each something might happen to ruin the harmony we have right now.

GSDs and pet rats

Does anyone here have pet rats? If so, how do you dogs do with these sweet little creatures? And if successful, how did you teach them?
(I have pet rats and one of them from the past was clicker trained).
