Donovan514 Try putting a treat on every other step. You can also bring him up. He might need to be shown that there is nothing to fear.

lennyb He'll go up four or five stairs and stop and He's more then physically fit and I don't know why he would be scared of what's up there, he won't go in the basement either and he's probably one of the most loved dogs in the world. I've tried treats and toys to no avail. I don't really push the issue with him. Im hoping him seeing the younger one do it may help him with this problem..Maybe I'm just being self centered but there's times I'd just like him to flop in bed with me and watch some TV.

VTGirlT He is scared of the stairs themselves? or is he scared of what is upstairs? Is he physically able to?

Have you tried using high value treats such as chicken, hot dogs, cheese, freeze dried liver treats to lure him up the stairs? You don't have to go all the way in one day. Go at his pace. If he will go up one step on day 1 on his own terms, work your way to two steps, and so on. You need to associate the stairs or being upstairs with positive things, so treats and praise, a favorite toy, a favorite game to play with you, etc. Counter conditioning. Basically you are going to change his emotions of fear of the stairs (assuming he is scared of going upstairs or the upstairs) with a sense of pleasure/calmness/happiness (he gets treats and praise and toys!)

Help with weird problem?

Hello all. I have 2 loving GSD's. One is 17 months and one is 18 weeks. Well my younger one will go upstairs with no problem but my 18 month old will not go upstairs for anything. He will go outside and come in with no problem (down & up approx 7 steps) but will not go up stairs to second floor (approx 15 steps) to save his life. As far as I know he's never falling down stairs and I'd like him to come up with me. I thought about carrying him but I don't want to scare him. Any ideas on this?
