doggiedad my dog will bark, whine, run up and down the hallway, get his leash,
spin, etc. when it's time to go out. i can open the door and he sits
or stands and won't exit untill he has a command. my GF doesn't like
his excitement. it doesn't bother me. it only last untill we're out of the door.

Lilie My dogs get into trouble for jumping on our sliding glass door. They beat the system by popping up and down and never actually touching the door. I won't open the door until they are sitting.

Blanketback Yes, my pup does that too - both the jump and the spin, lol. He jumps and barks until I tell him to move, then he gets out of my way and will bark and spin. I don't open the door until he's quiet, and he's not allowed to rush out the door until I give him the ok. There's a nice moment of silence when he's frozen at the door, waiting to be released, lol. I'm working on duration.

kristinloveschief I have a 5 month old GSD who gets excited and beats our blinds with his nose or jumps when we put his leash on. He's in training now(not protection, general obidence then canine good citizen so he can visit nursing homes) we make him do a sit stay before we open the door. The jumping and hopping doesn't sound like he learned that in training, it sounds like a behavior that needs to be corrected! I'd do a sit stay with both your dogs!

MadLab It sounds like excitement to me

Dogs ready to bolt out the door.

I expect dogs to relax around entrances to doors into garden or out onto street. Other wise they'll carry that excitement on our walk or see who can run fastest into the garden.

Mary Beth I have seen dogs do that who have had no protection training - one was a lab and the other a terrier, so I think it is just a dog's way. Maybe it is related to excitement about the door being opened.

Just a dumb question about, but curious about this

My GSD hops up and down like a bark and hold at the door when I go to let him out. It is funny. He has had protection training. My other just barks and spins in circles. She has not had training.

Is this hopping something learned in training or is it just instinct? I know it's a dumb question, but he is the only dog I've ever seen hop like this off field.
