Merciel Brooklyn is the only part of NYC where I can imagine having a dog of any kind. I won't pretend to be even vaguely acquainted with anything but Brooklyn and Manhattan, though, so if an actual inhabitant of NYC says otherwise, trust them over me. Commuting from NJ, as Gretchen suggested, might be more doable; that might be a good option to look into.

Country-to-city can be a difficult transition for a dog who's accustomed to the quiet rural life, and NYC is a LOT denser, noisier, and more congested than even the most crowded parts of Philly. More expensive, too, for everything from dog food to vet care -- and it can be very hard to find places that'll rent to a tenant with a big dog of an "aggressive" breed.

You can make it work, if you're willing to put in the time and effort (and money), but it does take some doing. If I were in your shoes, I'd spend some time thinking honestly about what would be in the best interests of my dog.

LifeofRiley I lived in Manhattan for 6 years - I did not have a dog at that time. If I were to move back to NYC with my dog, I would look in Brooklyn - there are a lot of dog friendly neighborhoods in that borough.

Gretchen Commute to NYC and find a place in the suburbs. The public transportation there is excellent. I grew up in NJ, would walk three houses down the street to the bus stop, where they had bus service every 30 minutes to NYC and was there in less than 30 minutes arriving at the port authority. If you lived in NYC, I would think you'd want to live near a park which is probably expensive - there's Central Park and Battery Park and probably grassy areas along the rivers.

huntergreen i would think it would be hard to go to school and have time to exercise your gsd. having said that, there are many dogs in nyc including all breeds. seems to be very dog friendly.

I live in a rather congested area of Houston. Keep 'em on a leash if you want him to live.
