Juliem24 Thank you both for your advice. We have started obedience classes, and I hope when the weather gets better we can get out more often. I will try the canned food in the Kong. He was not interested in peanut butter, and I never thought of canned food since we never fed it. He's so big, one forgets he's still a puppy. We got very lucky, for a rescue, he's great.

MaggieRoseLee Welcome to the forum and bless you for taking a rescue. Some of the issues you are having will probably smooth out as time goes by and your new dogs learns he's in a safe place and you won't be giving him away too...

Keep him LEAN and exercise him as much as you can. Any muscles can take the pressure/pain away from his hips if he does have an issue. So fit and lean dogs can live almost pain free for a normal good long life.

If you can find a trainer/dog classes you can work with, that's always a huge help for us. May have to start with some private lessons then work into a class setting.

If you start buying and using those rubber toys you can stuff with treats, that should be a help to get him over you leaving.

Kongs are too easy for my dogs but easy start for dogs not used to using them

I have to use Squirrel Dudes

Mary Beth My first dog was a husky. If you have classes in your area, that would be a great way to have your new gsd get used to being around other dogs in a safe environment. For your other concerns, you'll find lots of advice in the Training & Behavior of the GSD and the Health forums.

New to GSD!

I've always had dogs, raised Huskies for a long time. We adopted a 10 month old 90# GSD three weeks ago, and he has a few issues. He is sweet, has bonded very well, but is not socialized with other dogs. Since he is such a big guy,h ow do I manage that without terrifying smaller dogs' owners?
Also, he has terrible separation anxiety. We put him in a Vari-crate, any suggestions to otherwise help him? He knows hand signals, and he tries to be very good, but really panics when we leave. We are never gone for more than 2 hours, and we walk him before we leave to get him a little tired. We can not really work him out, he has a hip problems. Any suggestions would be very welcome! When we had huskies, we always had more than one, so they were fine when left home alone ( they were just devils...).
Thank you!
