Here this is a link to a video I took today she follows with out any treats or anything, when we track outside I'm still using bits of kibble but half the time se passes them to get to the end of the track quicker (I always hide her flirt pole at the end, this is her FAVORITE toy and she only gets it when we track)

Liz&Anna Also I have done water retrieves, in a big storage bin, where she has to put her nose entirely under the water to pick the toy up, I do scent pad style tracks outside as well with a comfy harness

i think you should pick a venue you like. your dog will
probably excell at anything.
At first I had her in a sir stay while I pretended to hide her ball in a few different places in very tall grass, then I would release her and ask her to find it- then bring it, this went really well and when she brought it back I would give her a treat then throw the ball for fetch, we did this for a while, then I moved to stranger items like silverware, car keys, pennies quarters copper pipes- at an attempt to make it harder, the entire one she searches she is scenting. next I took her to my friends house who was in the process of moving (lots of things in boxes everywere) I didn't show her what we were looking for ahead of time, I held a single key in my hand for 10 minutes, places her in a stay at the front door and went trough the house, I hid the key inside a box down the hall, she found it no questions asked. (I have it on video btw). The last thing I've done with her was to actually hold 2 quarters, one for 20 minutes and one for 10 minutes I hid them each in a separate shoe in the kitchen and asked her to find it, she brought me back the correct one, no problems at all

Kaimeju Pick the sport or hobby that has the most supportive and experienced community in your area. That's what I would do anyway. It sounds like your dog is having fun!

G-burg First I think you need to decide which style of tracking you want to do.. As each are different like you stated.. Then go from there..

The internet has a wealth of information as well on each of the different venues!

I want to compete- but in what??? Help!

I've been working short tracks with Anna now for over a month, she is 16 weeks old and she picked up up quickly, we originally went to a police k9 trainer to learn how to track and I know they are a little different then SCH, I have been hiding things from her every day, scenting them by holding the items for several minutes then hiding them and telling anna to find it- she never disappoints, always brings back the item with the freshest human scent and I'm telling you- she will bring back any thing!! Toys, silver wear, car keys, single keys, quarters, copper pipe, DVDs lol she seems unstoppable!! I want to compete in tracking or detection some how but I'm my really sure how to get in to that, I know there is AKC tracking and there is tracking in SCH and also nose work, are those my only choices? Does any one have advice or more info on them? Or is any one from the MD area?? thank you guys!
