Allie512 Correction: Allie started on 40 mg a day; she is now on 20 mg a day

Allie512 She is on prednisone - diagnosed with autoimmune disorder - started with 20 mg a day taken with pepcid, now down to 10 mg a day taken with pepcid. The vet has to make certain that nothing else is wrong before starting on prednisone. Allie had many tests - see this thread; also the vet treated her with dexamethasone IV without antibiotics. I would discuss autoimmune disorder with your vet. I was lucky - PetPlan reimbursed me most of the 2200 - like you, I could not afford to spend anymore and was very concerned. Please let me know how your girl is doing.

Barcagp What happened is she ok?

My GSD was just hospitalized with a 107 fever. All tests are negative. They have no clue what it is. She is on antibiotics and iv.
Her fever is down to 103 but I am worried when I take her back home It will come back.
We already spent $1500 and I'm afraid we can't spend more. Our family does not want to lose her. Do we have options?

Allie512 Allie is back home; at vet all day on dexamethasone IV and given 20 mg pred. with 10 mg of pepcid; temp is 102.2. Will see her tomorrow at 7:45 a.m. to check; last night her temp was 105.7 and she could not walk very well - lame in front leg. Temporary dx is autoimmune Polyarthritis - Thank you again for all of your support. Will treat with 20 mg 2 times a day of pred and pepcid 10 mg 2 x a day

GSDAlphaMom Be prepared for her to be very hungry, drink tons of water and pee ALOT. I can't remember Garth's initial dose but that sounds about right but I think he was on the high dose longer than that. They then slowly tampered it down to 5 mg a day then to every other day. Do not do an abrupt stop after 40mg a day. It will need to be gradual, plus you need to maintain keeping the fever down.

Keep us posted. I hope this works for her as it did Garth.

Allie512 the doctor was going to start with 20 mg of pred 2 times a day with pepcid and then review in 2-3 days. I worry that it could be something else that the pred. will make worse and /or bleeding ulcers. However, I am now convinced to try the pred - Allie is really not feeling well.

Again these are the exact symptoms and tests results Garth had. They basically rule everything out they can with tests, when they are all negative they deem it autoimmune. I'm not sure why you are worried about the pred. As I explained in our pm's. That is the only thing that kept Garth's temp down and once it was under control he was only on 5mg every other day (for life). That's not much more than the body produces on it's own. He was on it for 5 years before I lost him to bloat.

The high doses in the beginning are to get in under control. They will tamper it down and get to a maintenance dose. Based on my similiar experience I encourage you to give the pred a try and time to get it under control.

DaniRo So sorry to hear about your baby! :-( I had a collie mix years ago he had a fever that doctors could only bring down with steroids. We did many tests on him over a period of time. In the end he had cancer. I hope this is not what your baby has. I wish you the best of luck.
