hdc Hi Lee,

I have a very ornery Arab being boarded in my barn right now, as it were; he keeps life..."interesting".

Big names are where it is at for most people, I agree; I know that I myself of course have certain favorites that I don't mind seeing crop up, but as you stated, I have taken many a horse to the upper levels of competition that on paper wouldn't have made most blink. This is a GSD forum, so I will restrain myself from going into a tirade about the tissue-paper TBs being churned out production-line-style, disposable to many of those breeders seemingly hellbent on destroying the breed and what once made it great...anyway, in just the small amount of reading I have done last night and today, I have seen a LOT of posts and articles referencing precisely what you are speaking of in GSDs - what a shame. I admit that that is part of my desire to absorb as much as I can about the lines and related issues, pros, and cons - I like having enough knowledge to make a sound decision for myself as to which animal best represents a healthy example of the breed, and whose existence is a testament to the betterment of the breed. I see dogs no differently from horses in that respect.

Thanks for your post!

hdc Thanks, dawnandjr; I have indeed seen Fero's name popping up quite a bit today as I've been reading on various sites!

Hi David,

Thanks again; I'm not sure if you misunderstood my previous post - I have no personal opinion of either Stefan or the dogs he is producing at the present time, though I am interested in seeing what he has available. As a complete rookie, I take in all information and what I am unsure of gets filed away for later research/verification. I think it's great to learn that good, solid dogs are available here on U.S. soil - I had largely been told otherwise previously by individuals who appeared to know far more than I, which is what I was passing on to JakodaCD OA. (It was neither here nor there for me at the time, as finding another pup was the farthest thing from my mind, and I always knew that I would ferret out the facts for myself when the time came and it mattered - which is what I am attempting to do now). Now that I have embarked on my own research, it is gratifying to know that there are reputable breeders that I can perhaps get in touch with here in the States. Your input is much appreciated - I'm very happy to have learned of Stefan!

wolfstraum I am a pedigree freak too....and did horses most of my life....was pretty into Arabs as well as TBs - and apps/warmbloods....

I find that many people in the US judge a pedigree by how many big names are listed, along with BSP/WUSV dogs....and we horse people all know that not all genetically gifted animals come out of KY Derby winners....far from it....

female families, in GSDs, are pretty much ignored - the male is what everyone oohs and ahhs over.....and we who are TB fanciers know that the broodmares are the key....and like TBs, for many, performance production trumps everything - just as the TBs being line bred on crooked legged horses means producing a high percentage of breakdowns looking for that one superstar, there are definitely correlating situations in GSDs....

The key to looking for something is finding out the goals and values of the breeder....and if those fit into your needs

dawnandjr West German working line, just looked quick and saw that Fero is back there too. Very popular stud that was used a lot.

David Winners Yes, Stefan moved to the US from Europe. I feel we are lucky to have him.

I don't know what your definition of a good dog is, but I would find it hard to believe that anyone would claim that Stefan was breeding dogs that were not worth working.

Check out his web site and YouTube.

Search Staatsmacht on pedigree database.

Go check out his training facility and dogs.

JakodaCD OA hdc, there are ALOT of really good working line breeders/dogs here in the US. Just have to know who to go with. Have fun researching!

hdc JakodaCD OA,

Thanks for your reply; I will follow up with Stefan and see if he might be able to provide me with some more info, and maybe even schedule a visit in the future. Interestingly, I had been under the impression that there just weren't many "good" working-line breeders in the US, and had even heard one gentleman state that he would "never purchase an American-bred GSD, of any flavor, working or otherwise". That stuck in my head - I am really interested to see what Stefan may have, as I have been reading a lot of positive things about him and his dogs just on this board alone when I searched. Thanks again!

hdc WildWolf,

Thanks so much! I will check out the link you provided after I post this. I too really enjoy pedigree research, genetics, etc. (I have volumes and volumes of various works related to Thoroughbred horses, but am only just getting started where GSDs are concerned). I appreciate your reply!

JakodaCD OA hdc, not David, but I do believe Stefan was formerly from Germany and now resides here in the us...I think he might even be a member here tho doesn't post much.

Your best bet is to follow David's advice and contact stefan since the pedigree looks like the stud was staatsmacht dog. Mr Muller probably owned the female and bred the litter
