brembo My 11 month has now eaten TWO custom leather holsters. First one was totally leather, with a few metal rivets here and there to hold some stuff together. I cannot find a single trace of it. Second one was a hybrid of sorts with a plastic stiffener and metal loops for the belt. I found the stiffener bit and the metal loops, not a trace of the leather tho. Close to 300 bucks worth of custom hand-tooled leather goods gone because I forgot to put them up.

Now all I have is an outside the pants ballistic nylon Bulldog, and I hate it. Hoping Santa gets my hint that I need a new IWB holster.

Rbeckett Zookeep,
I think you may have hit on something because they only chewed the leather part of the top sider and left the canvas untouched. I know the girls get plenty to eat because I feed them both 2 cups of high protein food twice a day and the trainer even remarked that my Service Dog Dixie appeared to be getting a little fat. The outside dog is still lithe and doesn't seem to be gaining any weight or bulk but she was the runt of the litter anyway. She has been hovering right at 60 pounds for about 4 months now with little change. Boredom doesn't seem like a viable solution because since I an disabled I spend a couple of hours a day outside playing fetch and running/jumping games till both are too tired to continue. It might have been the tasty treat idea that they keyed in on because my shoes get worn a lot of places that would make them smell different and possibly even like a treat on occasion. So with that said, we have taken to putting our footwear out of reach and upping the play intensity a bit more. I don't want another pair of shoes eaten anytime soon so we will not tempt them to see if this solution works or not for a while...

Zookeep From your dog's point of view, leather shoes are food. She is thinking, "oh how lucky I am that someone has left this tasty animal hide around where I can chew on it". When I leave my shoes out and one of my dogs chews on them, I never blame my dog.

Xena9012 Wow, that does sound like puppy behaviour. Here are some reasons I looked up as to why older dogs start chewing when they have no chewing history:

Boredom or attention seeking
Anxious or scared (the act of chewing can be very soothing to dogs)
Reaction to pain (gums and teeth may be irritated)
Separation Anxiety

What!!!!! Wheres my shoes????

I don't have any idea what has gotten into my 2 and almost half year old dog. She is not technically a puppy any more, but this is surely puppy behavior that I need to stop. I woke up Friday morning as usual and proceeded through my day. At evening feeding time I could nt find my topsider shoes. They were nowhere in the house. I called the wife and asked her if she put them away and no such luck. My house dog had stolen both shoes of the pair and taken them to the land of many dangers (The back yard). When I fussed at her she went outside and promptly returned one that was unscathed. When my wife arrived that evening she went out to places in the yard that are inaccesable to me due to my health and could not find the match. Saturday morning I went out into the yard and found what was left of the other shoe in the rain. The tongue had been removed as well as the entire heel and all the leather lacing as well. so one pair of shoes now useless. My question is why is this dog who is a fully trained Service Dog just now starting to manifest these weird behaviours. They both get plenty of stimulation and I play with both of them frequently during the day since I am disabled and home all of the time. She has never stolen anything else from the house and brings in her toys all the time so they don't get wet or played with by the other GSD who prefers to remain outside in all but the worst weather. I am assuming she did this while we were all asleep during the night Thursday night since they were both gone Friday around mid day. Any thoughts or reasoning why a 2 year old dog just starts chewing her handlers shoes?
