GSDAlphaMom Waiting 18-24 months is fine. My vet is a friend, breeds and shows greyhounds and is as repro vet specialist. I saw her socially the other day and asked her specifically about this as I (knock on wood) in all my years have never had to deal with this.

She said yes he will need to be neutered but waiting til 2yrs isn't a problem. They still get testostrone so growth isn't impacted. The surgery can be tricky if it isn't eaisly located and they can have more than one cut if they have to go hunting for it.

She said there has been limited success with HGC injections which may help the testicles decend. It has to be done before 16 wks and is limited to 4 injections. I know your boy is older than that, just giving that as an fyi.

My Dalmatian puppy has Cryptorchidism. His ball is also in his abdomen.

My Vet also told me that I can wait until he is 18 months old but then I have to neuter him.

RiverDan What a crazy topic/debate. I have been reading for a week straight. 6-8 hours a day about neutering.
There is no right answer!!! None!!! The fact is, there isn't enough research. There are way too many factors to blame one thing or another on everything and nothing.
Either way. We are getting Baron done in 1.5 months. He will be 15 months old. He has one undescended testicle. He is either done skeletal growth. Or is very close. His muscle mass is good. He is fit, well behaved, and looks male. Its almost time to remove the retained testicle.
For the record. It'll cost $522-$716. Depending on difficulty. Which seems OK to me.

I'm more concerned with my male dog smelling a female in heat and trying to roam. I'm not sure how common that is. It's just something I've heard about....

All my dogs I had altered really early, because the vet said it was best. With Kaleb I'm waiting for as long as we safely can with his testicle in the abdomen. I know more now.

TAR HEEL MOM Several comments...first, chryptorchidism isn't really that uncommon. We see it quite often at the shelter. We use a low cost spay/neuter clinic (Humane Alliance..they are great) so all our surgeries are at the shelter cost of $50 and they do not charge more for a chryptorchid dog. I know the vets do and I think it is a ridiculous rip-off when they double or triple their price.

My lab was spayed at 2 years. I waited because I thought it was in her best interest and I considered breeding her but changed my mind. My GSD was spayed at 10 weeks because it is shelter policy that all pups are altered before they go home. I was a new employee at the shelter at the time and just went with the flow. Now I know that I could have waited a while and had my own vet do it since I work there and "they know where I live" and I wish I had asked then I would have waited until he was at least 2 probably.

I cannot advocate for delayed altering in my profession since we have no guarantee that the people we adopt to will keep the dog up and prevent litters. In my personal life though I prefer to wait until the dog is an adult.

And I agree that it just isn't that hard to keep your dog from being a parent I went through three heat cycles with my lab and she didn't conceive a litter.

They've seen that as a reason/excuse and hold on to it like its one of the ten commandments. Unfortunately those hormones are for more than reproduction, and there are secondary sex characteristics that do not develop properly when a dog is neutered too young. Some people will hang on that statement. But if it isn't made, they will hang on some other statement. People will alter if they want to alter. And they will not if they do not want to.

I think people should be more responsible with their dogs regardless as to whether they are altered or not. It is really not that hard to keep an intact dog and/or an intact bitch without letting anyone hook up. I personally don't think that altering is the answer to irresponsible dog ownership. But then, they don't even like to execute murderers... Ah well....

TaylorGSDT Here's one from today. I thought it was an awesome action shot and decided to keep it even though he looks feminine. He's my little girly man. Little meaning 81lbs (as of yesterday) of pure muscle.

TaylorGSDT Yeah. Of all the dogs I've ever had, he's the best. Completely well rounded, no aggression, easy to train, is a perfect gentleman with everyone and does great in big crowds, no cat or other animal aggression. And he especially loves my friends horse.

I agree with you 100% about the reasoning, but I never implied it was a good idea to not neuter for size, only for skeletal issues and only until as previously mentioned that the dog was matured. I'm sure there's a million other threads on here suggesting the same, I know a lot of people are in favor of waiting 2 years to alter unrelated to cryptorchidism. I didn't intend to suggest that, just as you didn't intend to offend. misunderstanding
