mcbrelle They say if you spay your female early you can avoid mammary cancer. What they DON'T tell you is if you spay your female you then INCREASE the risk of hemangiosarcoma by a factor of 5 or more!!
Mammary cancer is fairly easy to treat and diagnose, hemangiosarcoma is almost impossible to detect in time to treat and is a death sentence and a horrible one at that.

Considering German Shepherds already have one of the highest incident rates of hemangiosarcoma of any breed, I'll do what ever I can to reduce her chances of hemangiosarcoma which means NOT getting her spayed.

MichaelE My vet asked me if I was going to spay Lisl three times on three separate visits. I told him not to ask me again.

I'm not breeding Lisl and I can manage her cycles, but she will not be spayed.

Funny, I know of an 8yo male just recently being neutered due to prostate, I wonder if he would of developed this if he was neutered before 12 months?
Older males do develop prostate problems.
I certainly would rather neuter when necessary instead of neutering an immature dog.

My experience has been good with my males, who have lived long lives intact. One was neutered at 9 by an overzealous vet, without my permission, and all he did after that was sleep.
My family did have a female who was spayed when she was older. Heat was a pain, and I would spay females at about two or three.

Yes that is true, however my male is 62cm and female 60cm at the withers - which is excellent, I wouldn't want them any shorter or taller. Their colouring is exceptional.

My experience - I have seen a beautiful black and gold (red) dog lose his colour once he was neutered at 2yo.

Just my own personal experience.

N Smith I would do some reading and figure out what works for you and your dog.

IMO I would never spay/neuter unless medically necessary, HOWEVER, I have done the reading and have my house set up to accommodate multiple intact animals, with the least amount of risk possible of an unplanned litter.

If you would like to keep your girl intact until she reaches full maturity (average 2-3 years), you will need to be prepared to deal with heats and the limits that brings (especially for off leash exercise). As well as a huge thing to look out for is Pyometra (infection in the uterus).

For most companion owners, they either don't want to deal with any heats or maybe just one heat. If you are in the first camp, spay before 9 months, usually anytime after the adult teeth have all come in. If you would like your dog to go through one heat, then just 6-8 weeks after the first heat.

I do agree with you though that I would not be comfortable sterilizing a 4 mont old dog.

Do your research and pick whats best for YOU. There are many opinions and research on the pros and cons of each decision. What works for one, may not work for another. So even though you get lots of food for thought on here (Which I think is amazing!) make sure in the end the choice is one that you are comfortable with and can live with.
