pets4life thanks YEs that is exactly how my cat acting very slow stalking like a predator with intense stare and my dog returned the stare from across the room.

My dog made no noise just ran after the cat.

Harry and Lola Yep, the yelp would of been from the cats claw.

I think putting your dog in a crate for the time when your cat is awake and wanting to explore is a good idea and may help the situation. When cats are unsure, their movements are very slow and slick almost like a predator preying on a victim or stalking, maybe your dog took the offensive position.

I'm sure with time and adjustments, they will settle in together, hopefully they will bond again.

Don't worry much about the incident, I think both your animals are stressed by the issue.
Feed them both out of your hand one at a time more often. Place your cat used toilet bits around the house, spend at least one night with both of them in your bedroom. They should be "introduced" to each other again. I'd call your new vet and ask if any sedatives or tranquilizers could be used in such cases. I use valerian for my dog if she's stressed. Dogs not so, but cats could be terribly stressed being moved away from their usual home.

pets4life how long does it usually take for them both species to settle in any ideas?

Yeah they acted like each other were strangers for a second my dog was a dangerous predator to the cat and my cat was prey but for 3 years these 2 had such a good relationship, as in the dog would lick her all the time and sometimes groom her. The cat had no fear of the dog.

And today was like one of the few times the cat ventured up to look around.

You think its a good idea to maybe put the dog in her crate while the cat gets use to the upsetairs then slowly introduce the concept of cat and dog living in peace again?

David Taggart New home is a new territory both your animals felt is their conquered. They feel themselves intruders in a new place, and then intruder is always agressive, he has to be, otherwise the residents of the place would get rid of him. Something provoked your dog, could be some smells in the house he didn't discover before, but nobody else was around, only your cat. He attacked out of frustration - it happens often normally with males - unsatisfied they vent their fury on the small and weak. I don't think it would be repeated. Beware, your dog could react agressively in the street during first few months. Your cat will meet the residents, he might feel very nervous too.

cat owners any idea what happened?

I moved into a new place about a month ago

My cat and dog have lived together for 3 years they always got along

But out of the blue today i saw my dox staring at something then bolt I guess the cat was at the top of the basement stairs and the dog ran after her? SHe NEVER treats the cat like preY?

Then I hear my dog let out of loud YELP i go do down and give her a strong correction cause shes not suppose to go and bolt after my cat like that ever, she never did before

My cat took it so personally and just went insane all puffed up ready to fight for her life and now treats my dog like a strange dog that needs her eye sockets clawed out? My dog is not showing aggression or anything she even took her ball over to the cat but the cat tried to tear her nose off. Since i got here the cat has been hanging out really high up so doesnt come in contact with my dog much anymore also the cat spends a lot of time in the basement.

I wonder if the loud yelp was just from my cat clawing her?
