One thing to remember with the GSD breed. They are very intelligent. They are in the top 3 most intelligent breeds. You have to be committed to shaping that intelligence into good or it will go to bad. They need focus and training. All those well behaved GSDs are not that way by default. It takes a lot of work and time. If you commit to training them properly, they are the best dog on the planet.
I've always said there is nothing worse than a bored German Shepherd. They need mental and physical stimulation. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just something to do. I have seen the breed do some amazing things. You can look in their eyes and just see the wheels turning when they are working something out in their head.
Try and find a GSD club of some sort and go meet a few. I'm sure the members would enjoy letting you meet the dogs. We are proud of our dogs, the work put into them, and the results in the end.

Welcome. GSD are amazing dogs. But I admit now that I grew up terrified of them. I worked in a pet supply store and when one would come in I would hide, hyperventilating in the stock room. I had some very scary experiences with them as a young child.
What changed my mind? Going to obedience classes with a man that had SchH GSD. I had never seen better behaved, more well rounded dogs. I started researching the sport, decided that I wanted to do it, so started researching the breed and eventually got my first GSD. It's been downhill ever since. LOL
My suggestion to you, get out to breed clubs, meet some proper GSD. talk to owners, visit breeders. Be around correct adults. Volunteer with a rescue, help walk and socialize rescue dogs. Emerse yourself with the breed and se if you like them. There are a lot of breeds suitable for service work. And thus might not be the breed for you. So you need to learn.
Good luck. Sorry for the insanely long welcome post!!!!

Once you have bonded with a GSD it will be your best friend and companion for life.

Hello everyone. I'm Pixel, from England.
I'm looking into the possibility of getting a service dog in the next 1 - 3 years and one of the breeds I was told might be a good idea is a German Shepherd, so I thought I'd join and learn more about the breed.
I'll be honest, these dogs actually really scare me, but I also want the best dog for the job, so it's it's a GSD, I want to get over my fear and learn to work with them.
Also, unrelated to the dog, for some reason messages here are showing with the newest post first and the original post last, I was wondering if there's a way to change that? I have some cognitive issues and it's really confusing.
