walked Thanks all. I appreciate the insight and will admit that I'm the one offbase then.

This should make my fiancee happy! Probably get a couple "told ya sos" as punishment.

BellaLuna I leave Bella free to roam while our puppy is in his crate, this allows me to sleep without any worries about what kind of mischief he might get into while I'm resting.

I used to worry about being fair and felt bad for him but I got over this because I know he's safe and so all my belongings lol.

He loves his crate and often times will just go in there whenever he gets tired without me having to tell him too..

stmcfred I don't crate my older dog. He's almost 9 and hasn't been in a crate since he was like 7 months old. I do crate the puppy though. It also helps give the older dog a break from her.

jocoyn I do not believe dogs have a perception about "fairness" the way we do. The pup should be crated because he is a puppy. If the older dog is used to being out at night, I would leave it as it is.

mspiker03 Our older GSD is left out and the pup is crated at night (same situation if we leave them during the day). Our older dog hasn't slept in a crate in awhile so we didn't want to further disrupt her routine (since her routine was already somewhat disrupted with an annoying puppy).

Shade I would crate the puppy and leave the older one out. I do the same with my two, my older poodle is out and sleeps on my bed at night and Delgado sleeps in a xpen (his choice) beside the bed. During the day they're both crated, it keeps them out of trouble

LaRen616 Both my puppy and my dog are free at night. My dog sleeps next to my bed on the floor on his bed and the puppy has been sleeping in my bed with me since he was 11 weeks old.

During the day when I am at work the puppy is crated and the dog is free to roam the house.

Crating at night; what do do with other dog?

We brought a new GSD puppy into our household a couple weeks ago. We also have a 2 year old who is crate trained and uses that during the day; but is well behaved enough to sleep through the night just outside our bedroom.

What we're struggling with is what to do at night now that we've go the 15 week old GSD being crated. (mind you I do one potty break about 5-6hrs into the night).

I feel its best to crate both dogs as that's the habit when we leave the home, and I worry about treating them non-equally.

My fiancee thinks the puppy only should be crated at night, with our older left free to roam.

Is there an actual school of thought on this one? Perhaps I'm off base.

(Note: I work from home so it's not like the dogs are seeing 18hrs of crating a day between nights and work!)
