Just the beginning
With last night being the end of our 'beyond basics' training, it was a bitter sweet moment for Gunner and I. The bitter moment was the ending of the class - I enjoyed it way too much - but the sweet moment just about made me cry.
Five weeks ago my trainer met Gunner for the first time during our private lesson to watch how we work together (typical heel, sit, down, stay etc). Like always, Gunner was on his prong collar and would only do what I asked out of fear of being corrected. His ears were down and he wasn't enjoying the training time.
Last night I saw a complete different dog.
He was excited to do what I asked.
Willing to throw out commands just to see if that was the right one I was asking.
We were doing a recall exercise (which he has never had good recall) and he launched towards me when I called him. Got him into heel position and then released him. Normally he would get a treat as a reward but we have been trying to not always use a treat ( and he is not very interested in a tug ), so instead I used myself as the 'toy' and started to play with him. He kept coming back to me to play/interact.
He was happy and having fun.
And last night I trained with him only having a flat on him (previous weeks I had him on the flat, but had a small grab line on his prong collar).
This training is just what we needed to be a successful team.
It is the beginning of a great partnership.
