|Tabbie||It does sound like something has changed. My Cassie is going thru a head injury, she has lost a lot of confidence and barks at passing neighbors who she already knows. I wonder if the vision in her right eye has been injured. I too am experiencing HI. We were playing "Chicken", and collided head to head. I had bleeding in my eye lid, and I believe she has been affected too. We will work thru this.|

|Nikitta||German shepherds are a very protective breed especially as they are more confident with their family. There are more smart people about this breed here, BUT, if you don't like the behavior, more training is indicated. Not anyone's fault. Just get the experts involved here. This is a wonderful breed but they are very family orientated that you need help with, obviously. ( I have gotten advice many times on this breed. )|

"Too protective" suddenly....
Lola is a very gentle and good-natured GSD. We met her at 4 months and brought her home at 8 months. She wanted us badly and she's been great so far. Now a couple of things have happened I am not happy about.
In the recent past when we went camping or had anyone over to our home she's been just right with an alert bark and quieting down immediately upon being told to. This last time we went camping she was more territorial of our site, barking at a friend who she's met multiple times. I was using the restrooms and my son was on site. As well, she had to be tied to her stake and line (per rules) so I am thinking she felt the need to be even more defensive.
The second to last time we had friends over to our home she started up again randomly barking at them. Not a vicious bark, but still.....She was reprimanded and put in her crate (not happy about that) and the next time we had friends over she didn't repeat that mistake.
I am wondering if it's a phase (1.5 years old) where she is trying to figure out how protective to be or what??? And besides reprimanding her (I have been a responsible dog owner for years so I do like to think I know what I'm doing) I am unsure with her why it's happening and what else I can do.
I grew up with a GSD but was a kid and she was a backyard sweetie. Totally different situation and dog. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
