Need advice: possibly adopting "protective" dog (text heavy)
Hi all -
We are set to meet a local dog that needs rehoming this weekend. I spoke with his current owner and wanted some insight and advice about his behaviors. I train dogs (mostly puppies) as a hobby but none of them have shown any real aggression towards me so I want to make sure I'm not getting myself into a mess. She thinks he is fear aggressive but some of these behaviors do not sound like fear!
--- The owner says he is great and friendly toward her unless she corrects him. I'm not sure what kind of corrections she is issuing but apparently he is not very receptive.
--- On walks, he ignores passing people and dogs. If someone approaches, especially if they look at him or pay attention to him, he barks and growls.
--- He acts like he wants to play or interact with her neighbors (bringing the ball up to the fence, ears up, tail out) then wont let people play with or pet him.
It takes him a long time to warm up to people, but he does after awhile and then he will obey them. However, even after we get to know him (which we plan to do over the course of several weeks) I am a bit concerned about "the hand off". If we decide to take him, how should i handle this? I can imagine us leaving his owner with him, or her leaving him with us, in any way would really upset him.
Thanks so much for your help! We do have a training club lined up, but the owner is a busy lady and I wanted to see if I could pick your brains first!! Thank you!
