|nhstadt||Thanks for your input, ya I kind of figured that was the best route, just trying to see if anyone had any experience shipping. Like you said, I'd be super worried about shipping my dog though.|

As freight, costs depending on which airline is shipping the dog range anywhere from $350 to $500 or more, if you are lucky enough to find an airline that will ship a dog. Seems they are getting away from that.
Dog will have to have a big enough crate and then a current health certificate. Usually has to be at airport 2 hours ahead of shipping time.
You would probably be smart to let the roommate keep dog until you get established, then drive and meet him halfway. Easier on the dog for sure.
Good luck with your move.

I would probably leave him with your roommate..He's used to that being his home, he has a buddy to play with, this way you can get established.
Not sure I'd ship my adult dog, (to paranoid about the what could happen)..But if your roommate offered to drive him up, you could even meet half way say..

Short term foster/shipping a dog?
Got a few questions on shipping a dog, here's the situation-
I'm going to be making a big move from Arkansas to NY for work here in the next few months, and I may end up staying with family up there for a short period of time while I find a place and get established. My options as far as that goes are 1)my grandfather who, while pretty spry for his old age has hip problems and I would be worried about my dog knocking him over/tripping him up and injuring him, and 2) staying with my Aunt and Uncle, who have small children, a situation my dog has never been in, and while I do not think he would bite them unprovoked, he hates having his tail pulled, feet messed with, etc. and he might nip at them, which is something I do not want. Also they live in a big McMansion with a bunch of nice stuff for my dog to break and/or get all hairy, Don't wanna put that much undo stress on my family. That being said, my best friend has offered to watch my dog for a few months and then either ship him up or drive him up himself once I get my own place.
Anyone have any experience with a situation like this?
How did it turn out?
If I end up shipping him, what does that normally cost and Is it safe?
P.S.-My friend is also a dog owner and we are currently roommates, my dog absolutely adores him and gets along great with his dog so that part is a nonissue as far as environment change goes, the only change would be me not being around. aside from that my only worry is I would hate for my dog to feel like I abandoned him, even if it was just for a short period of time.
