If you are compelled to go the adoption route there are tons pb rescues out there. If you decide on the shelter route it can be a lengthy search, well it was for me. I had an age, breed and wants like basic commands and it being potty trained. I searched for 7 months before I found my Thor (who is a sweet amazing boy). He was a few days from being pts. It was fate. He did have behavior problems but with a little work at tlc he is the best family dog I could ask for.
With my 2nd gsd I was lucky enough to find him at 6 weeks old from a no kill shelter. I do not regret those decisions at all.
Those are just my personal success stories with finding my boys. Good luck in whatever you choose

|Smithie86||And when you adopt, adopt from a reputable rescue.|

I was in the same boat before...
I got my GSD from a reputable breeder, her dogs were all champs, etc. I wouldn't have considered a rescue in the past because I wanted the pedigree, etc. However, after seeing some rescues that are just the most solid dogs ever, I have changed my mind. If I was looking to add another GSD today, I would be looking strongly at a rescue.
I will say there is also another advantage with a dog from the rescue...their personalities are developed and what you see is what you get. This is not the case with a puppy.

It is a personal preference. I adopted a 2 year old pure bred GSD from the shelter. She lived to be 14.5, was healthy until the last year and just an all around great dog. I volunteer with a GSD rescue. It is one of the good ones, IMO. We really try to work with the adopters to find the right dog. If you have a bad experience with one rescue, please try out another. All rescues are not the same.
We get puppies into rescue. Some are PB and some are mixes. We get young adults and older dogs too. Some are very well bred. It never hurts to take a look.

|llombardo||I was getting ready to put a deposit on a puppy from a breeder, then I walked into the animal shelter and found Midnite. I knew he was meant to be mine and walked away from the puppy. I didn't like his coloring or looks at all. His temperament won me over and all the other stuff grew on me. Once he filled out and calmed down I realized how beautiful he is inside and out. You'll know when the right dog comes along.|

Why would anyone feel guilted into any animal? I don't really understand it, because as a rescuer, I'd want that animal to go to the best possible home.
I'd work or volunteer with a rescue to get an inside view of what they are about while waiting for that perfect pup to come along(if that is the route you choose over a breeder). Some are a bit on the radical side...you should be able to discern if you see it from the adoptor perspective vs the adoptee.
