I feed raw chicken bones, it's a big part of my boys diet. But they are not a rec bone.
I believe the raw bones you are talking about are fine. I use to give raw marrow bones and scoop some of the marrow out, it's very rich. But then I got nervous about a tooth being cracked because the bone is so dense. But alot of people give them with no issue.
I do give deer antlers as a chew.

These would be for recreation. We plan on a high quality kibble. I was wondering specifically about splintering. I know chicken bones are a no-no but wasn't sure about elk/bison/deer.

oh, good point.

I would never give anything smoked or cooked. Raw, yes.
Are you feeding a raw diet or are these recreation chew bones?

Elk/Bison/Deer bones okay?
We will be getting our puppy soon and were at the breeders this weekend. We were told that the only kind of bones we should give our dog are beef bones.
I was wondering if it is okay to give elk, bison, or deer bones - smoked or raw?
