Fair point. I don't have stats to back it up so it's conjecture on my part.
I'll explain my reasoning process to just clarify how I arrived at my conclusion. I do think culturally we've shifted to be more sensitive to and aware of animal abuse. This can be evidenced through laws, awareness campaigns and organizations trying to help animals, these are fairly new. As a result we now have mechanisms in place to deal with animal abuse that we didn't have previously. That's how I'm extrapolating that the results would be less abuse in general, in sort of a pendulum shift way.

I don't really know that animal ABUSE used to be more prevalent. Perhaps slightly different definition of what is abuse? But most people have always treated their animals humanely and responsibly.
There is one thing that keeps twitching around in my brain about this story. Simply that they send out the warning to people in "the ohio river valley" UMM, that is the entire western side of West Virginia.
I posted it in warning to anyone who lives in the area, though they have probably seen it. Or anyone who might be visiting family in the area.
Also as a general warning about taking care leaving your animals outside unattended.

I agree this really is terrible but it's not that we have that many more sick people running around in the world. We do have access to more media and coverage.
IMO animal abuse used to be more prevalent but our society has learned to be more compassionate, not perfect by any means, but a lot better then even when I was growing up. We do have more laws to address abuse and it's very possible if caught this perp will face jail time. Many jurisdictions hold crimes like this as a felony.
Let's keep in mind all the great people out there who are very good and kind to animals and not let stories like this make our world seem more darker and sad then it is........ just sayin'......

|Rangers_mom||It is just frightening to think how many sick people there are out there. How does anyone get pleasure in the suffering of another living thing. It is very scary.|

This is terrible. It also reminds me that people who are cruel to animals usually are abusive to other people as well....
David...I hope the perp takes you up on that offer.

I would like to cordially invite the perpetrator of this crime to my back yard. Please PM for details

yes we do. Unfortunately, even if they catch the person/people doing this, they will get off with a slap on the hand with the excuse like " a dog bit me when I was young, so I hate all dogs" or some other garbage.
Nobody has any consideration for anyone elses things or pets or life.
