Like Katie said I got my dog from Grunenfeld kennels located in El Cajon. Depends on what you're looking for, her main focus is breeding for health and temperament... I've met MANY people with dogs from her in this area, a lot of these dogs have lived 14 years. So far I've been very happy with my pup, great temperament, excellent health so far and a great dog to live with. We do herding and he excels at that and we are going to be trying some other sports too soon.
She mostly breeds WGSL's but she also occasionally breeds solid black, bi-color WGWL's... My dog is a SL/WL cross(she occasionally does these crosses as well but seems to happen less often), she knows what she's doing when it comes to mixing lines. She's been working with shepherds since the late 60's and breeding since the mid 70's... She is extremely knowledgable, was one of the founders of the San Diego schutzhund club, used to train police k9's for El Cajon, among many other things. She can sometimes be difficult to work with(not the best people skills) and she's VERY old school(think koehler) when it comes to training but everyone I know who has dogs from her has been happy including me! I wouldn't judge her based on her website, she's older and very not tech savvy... I'm really sorry about the loss of your pup.

|mycobraracr||Does the breeder have to be in SoCal? Are you looking for a WL or SL? The only breeder that comes to my mind right now is Adler Stein Kennels-German Shepherds-German Shepherd Puppies-Working Line German Shepherds. Weather her dogs would fit your needs or not. Only you and her can answer that.|

Hi trcy, so very sorry for the loss of your Riley. Everyone heals differently, but I found having a little puppy to focus on did help deal with the loss. Hope your heart is on the mend soon..
I havent personally gotten a dog from a breeder in Cali, but I do know CarrieSue has gotten her GSD Ollie from vom Grunenfeld, and has been very happy with him.

anyone use a breeder in southern california for their dogs?
I just lost my GSD. He was only 9 months old and had what I guess was a genetic disease. I'm not sure if I'm ready for another dog yet, but people keep telling me if a get another one it helps.
I'm just researching breeders right now. Riley did not come from a breeder. He was the best dog. I couldn't ask for better, but he had health issue. If I get another dog I'm trying to avoid the genetic health issue.
So, I googled some breeders and quickly became overwhelmed. It probably doesn't help that I'm still grieving and some of those sites are just to much to take in.
So, if anyone can recommend a breeder in the southern California area they personally have used and were happy with their dogs I would really appreciate it.
our dogs are primary family pets. Riley was well trained. He went to three training classes and was gong to start training for the CGCT. Then therapy dog work. He loved people and especially children.
