Babs' outing with the girls today, on the bike path
I had my sister's six-year-olds today, and since they go back to school tomorrow, I decided to bring Babs along.
It was hot, and she was hanging out in the SUV, for some of the day -- yes, it was cooler in there with the windows open and back up, as it offered some shade. But finally after we got all the work done, and I took the kids to their gymnastics class, and got through that, we went to the bike trail.
Now, I have let the girls walk Babs to the park and back. But the bike path is much more challenging. It is about the width of three bicycles. And their ARE bicycles being driven by, many of them. And walkers. Today there was only one dog being walked, a little dog on a Flexi-lead. That was the only time I took the lead from the girls.
I guess at 8 years, I should feel I trust Babs in just about any situation. But who knows what a dog will think of when it is being managed by a tiny kid. And I wasn't too sure of the flexi-lead dog, so I avoided any problem by taking hold of the leash and answering the lady's "my dog just wants to play" by saying that I did not want my dog to play with her dog, and got the terrified grip of death reaction. I assured her my dog would not bite, but I take her to shows, etc. So she just said, that's why she always asks.
Well, frankly, I was not there for my dog to go play with other dogs. I was there to teach the girls how to walk the dog. And by the end of our session, they had both walked her with challenging distractions, both on foot, jogging toward and away, and on bicycles coming toward us, and coming up from behind.
They both gave her a WITH ME command and turned her in a 360 right a number of times, and Elena even used the BACK command to have her go 360 left.
I was really proud of the girls and Babsy today. I got some looks of people who were impressed or thought the girls were cute with the dog, and others of people that were a bit distrustful, but Babs was a little lady through it all.
At the end, I took off her leash and did a little off leash heeling and rally moves and then told her to go the car, and she loaded up.
I had made chicken soup for dinner, using a roaster, and I let Analisa feed her the giblets.
And I followed my sister's roommate to the rental car place and drove her back. She had a business call the entire time. Babs never made a peep in the back of the vehicle. I always joke that with persistance and perseverence, in another nine years, the puppy will be the best in the neighborhood. Well, Babs maybe got their a little early.
