JeanKBBMMMAAN Ha!

Yes - that is definitely one of those things that really is bothersome - the Asperger's "connection" which...not good. I am not even sure how that jump was made.

NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness - Mental Health Support, Education and Advocacy has good information. There are some other websites that show the incidence of violent crime and mental illness. Easier to read the conclusion:
Violence and mental illness: an overview and Facts About Mental Illness and Violence - Mental Health Reporting - UW School of Social Work (older info)

Sometimes people are just jerks.

Definitely need to have the google open in another tab when you are reading some websites!
I knew about that article-- there was another one in more recent news (granted it was in the Huffington Post or something, I believe...so who knows) that now I cant find. Oh well. The age of the article doesn't really matter--still the same point (pun not intended ) that it's addressing a symptom and not the root of the issue.

And sometimes it's not an actual organic mental illness, people get angry, they get mad, they get full of bad feelings and want to make other people feel bad too - they take their anger out instead of in. That doesn't make it a mental illness. Fact is, people with mental illness are more likely to be the victim of a crime, not the perpetrator.
I think that's a really good point. There's so much gray area in terms of what "abnormal thoughts" get lumped under (conduct disorder, things like that)... and what do you do to manage it? There's also been a lot of talk about how this was "caused" by the fact that he may have had Aspergers, which is just infuriating....

Konotashi No parent wants to think their child is capable of something so terrible, whether they know they're ill or not.

I know my mom didn't, (and I don't care to publicly go into detail) but I basically proved that if I'm pushed far enough, I could be.
That being said, I've found more productive ways to channel my negative energy.

Very true.
But in this case, she knew.

Fact is, we will never know everything about how this perfect storm came about, or if it could have been prevented.

This is why people are so obsessed with finding out why: they want a reason, so they can box it up nicely, and then take steps so that it may never happen again.

The sad and horrible thing is that it will, even if we find out why.

There have always been evil people or psychopaths, or sociopaths -- you just never heard about the atrocities immediately and globally because there was no Internet.

Konotashi I completely agree.
And considering the fact I have been diagnosed with a mental illness, I do NOT blame her for not seeing the signs.
Neither of my parents thought anything was wrong with me until I flipped one day and was admitted to the behavioral hospital.
Had I not 'snapped' that day, I would likely still be undiagnosed.

Mental illness is a touchy subject and the signs aren't always blatantly obvious.

Jax08 How do you know when you have a crazy kid that is capable of violence on that scale? How do we know that he was crazy all along? it's entirely possible that he had some kind of mental break. From some reports, if they are true, she was talking about putting him in a school or some type of institution just prior to the shooting. How do we know that didn't twist something in his head and set him off?

I'm not ready to pass judgement on this woman quite yet without at least seeing some kind of official report that she was the reason he was twisted.
