selzer I don't understand what is meant by "a good way."

My dogs can be handled by a vet whether I am there or not, and sometimes the vet is going to put a needle in their leg and put them to sleep to do x-rays or surgery.

While this is not torture, it is hard to say what a dog understands. They are people we don't live with, they may be people we haven't met before.

Given the opportunity, they will most likely run away and not get close to a stranger, especially if they have evil purposes brewing and are giving off nasty pheramones. But if they do not have the opportunity for flight, I think most of them will try to appease or do what the person wants and it will take some doing to get them to fight back.

msvette2u That dog on the soccer field was an accident waiting to happen.
We rescued a dog that laid down/rolled over on his back like that when you'd try to do anything with him. Every time you wanted him to do anything, he'd do that, then he'd nip and bite when you'd try to get him back up.

It's kind of passive/aggressive (if dogs can be such) because he'd act passive/submissive but if you reached down there he'd bite.

That dog on the soccer field reminded me just of that and I thought I saw nipping/biting behavior at one point although they finally got him up and away, but not by his collar, only by picking him bodily up and toting him off.

Gharrissc I know some of my rescue dogs would run and some would definitely fight back if pushed to that point. My Cattle Dog would try to run or cower if she were being attacked and couldn't get away. I don't think a dog who chose to fight back and didn't back down would be 'wrong' though.

pets4life yeah i think every dog has a breaking point

some will just do it much quicker than others some will take a serious serious beating before they bite back

it is so sad how sweet dogs are to people

Will a dog protect itself?

I know we have had the discussion if a dog would protect its owner from danger, but how about the dog protecting itself if its cornered, getting abused, or attacked in any way? I'm not talking about the owner of the dog, but a stranger? What if your dog got away and some kids found it and started kicking it, would your dog attack or run the other way? I watched the video of the GSD that got on the soccer field and even though it wasn't getting attacked, there was a lot going on and the dog did well. How many of our dogs would react in a good way?
