I'm always interested in this topic, as there seems to be a divergence of opinion. I have a 5 month old puppy who is also pretty ungainly. But he's also pretty high energy.
I've been taking him for walks since he was about 12 weeks old. We started pretty slowly at first (about 1/4 mile) and stayed off of hard surfaces. He just turned 5 months old and we've built up to between 1 and 1.5 miles nearly every day. Again, it's all walking and almost entirely on trails/grass. Frankly, I couldn't imagine what he'd be like without some daily exercise.

I personally would not walk a 4 month old that much. Stick to 5-10min max
Between 4-6 months my gsd was very thin and leggy. He walked and ran like a clown.. His 8 months now, his ligaments are strengthening and his walk/trott is looking effortless.
I think it's a stage they go through

My 4 month old German Shepherd walking funny?
My 4 month old GSD is walking a little funny. When he walks his back legs look a little awkward. I just started taking him for walks this week, and we only walk for 30 mins and no running. He is not in any pain. I'm the only one in my family that has noticed it, maybe I'm just being paranoid. Ace is my first German Shepherd I have owned and I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.. so is this common for GSD puppies to be walking like this when they're growing?
