Oh...I forgot to mention....with my current ( 3rd ) GSD I used hand signals from the get go with her and it seems to add a beneficial element to the overall process as maybe it has trained the dog to focus a bit more on me....yeah, I know ...it's all about me....plus it's a real " ooh and aahh" around people that know little about dogs.

Glad to hear Stella has a new pal to cheer her up.
I also like your attitude ..."this is going to be fun, I was told to expect it and I say bring it on!!! I have fallen in love with him." I think that will get you a long way down the road with Stanley.
Hmmmm...17 week GSD pup and looking for advice...patience, assertiveness, solid leadership, tons of fun and be proactive as your pup experiences the world....the more positive experiences will make for less training in some ways. I have a bias of course but these GSDs are smart and seem to thrive on being well exercised as well as mentally stimulated with tasks of most any nature.
