liferebooted Hi everyone. I've decided to wait just a little bit on getting her used to one. She seems to be scared of cars, trash cans and mail boxes on walks...again. I don't want to give her something else to be scared of during this fear phase or whatever she's going through.

I think it's a little soon, especially since she's still growing. A pack that fits her now may not fit her when she's a year and a half or two years old. A good quality pack is not cheap, so why buy two when you can just wait until she's more mature and near her adult size?

I don't put any weight in the pack until 18 months old. I got Halo's pack a couple of months prior to that, and had her wear it empty to get used to it, but I think it only weighs about a pound with nothing in it.

In the meantime, you can get a fanny pack for yourself that holds a couple of water bottles. That's what I do on shorter hikes where we don't need that much water, or on super hot days when I don't want to put a pack on the dog. I have this one: Mountainsmith Buzz TLS There's just enough room in the pack to carry a collapsible water dish, my car keys, and a few other small items, and a bottle of water for me and the dog.

Pax8 Huh. Dumb links. Anyways, yeah, I would get her used to them now. I start off with a cheaper one, but honestly it's up to you. I've heard good things about the Kyjen as well.

Your link says page not found for me, I've been eyeing this backpack as a starter one, I have to measure her still though
Weird, both of our links aren't working atm, it must be amazon, "Kyjen Outward Hound Backpack" is the one Ive been looking at.

Cassidy's Mom Here are a bunch of previous threads about backpacks that should answer all your questions: German Shepherd Dog Forums - Search Results

Pax8 At that age, I usually find a cheap one at a Petsmart or Petco and start having them wear it empty to get used to it. Maybe a couple water bottles if I want to add weight. Then I look into buying a permanent one at about 1.5 years. I'm really liking what I'm reading about the Mountainsmith. I think that's going to be Kaiju's adult backpack.
But until then, he has a super cheap off brand one that I picked up at Petsmart for like $10. So it doesn't matter if it gets beat up during puppy antics or he outgrows it.

When can I start having my girl wear a backpack?

Hi, my girl is 8.5 months old, weighed her maybe 3 weeks ago at 61.3 lbs. I want to train her to wear a backpack even though we only walk around the neighborhood, it'll give her something to do. Its probably going to always be empty or at the most have 1-2 bottles of water in it to keep me hydrated with my eczema. At what age can I buy one to have her start getting used to it? I don't want to get it too early and mess up her bones.
