glowingtoadfly I find dog message board trolls really sad. I suppose they are dog people though!

selzer For me there are pet owners, and there are dog-people. Some pet owners, have a dog or even two dogs, but they aren't dog-people. They take care of Sparky and Doofus, but they don't actually DO anything besides own them. Maybe they walk them once a day or once a month.

But they aren't buried in the internet learning everything there is to know about them. Their idea of a great night out, is not going to training classes and stopping afterwards at Arby's to talk about dogs with other class participants. They aren't plastering photos all over the internet of their dogs with the holiday of the month garb on.

Maybe they take their dog with them and maybe they leave their dog home when they visit relatives, but they definitely do not understand the etiquette. Case in point, my family, yesterday:

I am a dog-person. My dogs stayed home. I thought of bringing the puppy, Moofy, but decided since we are going to watch fireworks afterwards, and my brother in law tends to be pretty obnoxious at family gatherings, I would leave the pup home. He and his wife have no pets.

My eldest brother and his wife, who own pets, not necessarily dog-people, but they left their dogs home, because it never occurred to them to bring one. They did offer to lend the one that is a good mole hunter to my dogless brother in law, at some point in the conversation.

And my middle brother and his wife, who own a dog, 11 year old beagle/dachsund mix, came with their dog, to spend the night at my sisters. They own a dog, but they are NOT dog people.

Now, who here wouldn't have misgivings about going to a family member's home who have babies, but no dogs, no pets, about where you would allow your dog to go? I mean, would you call and ask first before bringing the dog? Would you assume the dog sleeps in bed with you, or lays on the smooth leather couch with you? Really.

I'm a dog-person, and I wouldn't expect my sister to even want my dog in her house. If I brought the dog, it would have been crated in the garage while we went to see the fireworks. And so I chose to leave the dog at home. I would NEVER allow my dog to climb up on a non-dog-owner's couch. In fact, I wouldn't let them climb up on a dog-owner's couch without that being ok'd before hand.

At my house, if you sit on the couch, you might get up with a dog hair on you. I should vacuum more than I do. And there will probably be at least one dog with the run of the house, but if you are worried, I'll crate her.

Dog people pay attention to details if they involve the dogs, how their dogs are perceived. And the dogs are not an afterthought when making decisions. The decisions are made with a plan for the dogs already in mind. It simply doesn't come down to, we are moving, and now we need to get rid of Fido. Dog people figure out where to move to so that Fido has a back yard, or is accepted in the rental, or what have you. The same is true about vacations. We do not just say yes, to go on a European tour. We may go, but we first think about how long, and what we are going to do with the dogs. They are just always taken into consideration when we make plans.

Dog people tend to gravitate toward other dog people. We can have friends who are not dog people, but we have learned to keep dog-related conversation to a minimum with them. Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole.

Lots of pet-people are dog-people, but not all pet people are dog people.

glowingtoadfly I don't think regular people with dogs go onto a forum and giggle about their dogs' quirks.

glowingtoadfly I have my well bred under socialized boy to the point that he can walk down a crowded street calmly and focus on me. The schutzhund people kindly condescend to socialize him and teach him to play. LOL Shiggs sounds like a character.

Schutzhund shigs. Poor shigs has no concept, I ask her to sit and she lays down and covers her eyes with her paws and waggs her tail. She is great on a leash , great recall, loves loves loves people, but my god no cocept.
