TinkerinWstuff My son was camping with us by 12 weeks. Not sure why your dog couldn't handle it.

Camping - how young can you start?

How young is too young for camping? We're getting a new puppy in late July (he was born on May 26) and we were hoping to start camping with him right away. Obviously, he'd be on a long tether for the first year or two and we wouldn't leave him alone in camp. Would it be too much for him to start camping at 9 or 10 weeks old?

We camp a lot in the summer and fall, and started camping with our current dog when she was about 7 months old (she was born late Oct/early Nov) and she was fine with it. She's 5.5 now. She sleeps in the tent with us and loves being so close to us while we sleep. We tethered her for the first 2 summers, but when she was 2.5 we found we didn't need the tether anymore. She sticks pretty close by and has excellent recall. We're planning to do the same with our new puppy.

We're lucky enough to have some bare land property on a lake that we camp on, so we don't have to worry about campground rules. The cougars stay away as our current dog is too big to appeal to them, and the bears haven't bothered us. I think they roam past every once in a while, but it's quite rural and most of these bears have had no contact with people and stay away from us - we keep our food packed up and they haven't learned that people mean access to yummy food.
