That's what I was trying to figure out...how the breed survey ties into registering the dogs in FCI countries/registries, if at all.

Liberatore The FCI is not an independent registry, it recognizes one registering body from each country. The AKC is not a 'recognized' registry but has an understanding with the FCI for exporting dogs from the USA into FCI recognized countries. In order for a dog to be registered with an FCI recognized registry in another country, when exported from the USA, the dog's AKC registration must be in the name of the new owner, and a four generation pedigree from the AKC must be sent in. In order to travel into Europe an ISO microchip must be implanted into the dog before his/her rabies vaccination is given and the number must be noted on the rabies certificate. Breed surveys are for breeding purposes, not registration purposes for the individual dog. I don't know specifically how the SV works as I've never exported to Germany, just other FCI recognized countries.

Hope that helps.

Liesje If you do anything through the SV, like DNA a dog so the puppies can be SV registered or do a-stamps, the dog will get an SV number but won't be re-registered with the SV. Meaning you're not going to get SV papers. The AKC papers already prove the dog is purebred and registered with an acceptable registry and the AKC can issue official pedigrees.

Castlemaid Not sure what you mean by registration transferred. Do you mean would the AKC registration be accepted and recognized?

In Canada AKC registration is accepted for CKC registration. Only thing is that the dog must be on full registration (so limited AKC is not transferable to CKC), and the dog must be identified by a CKC approved ISO chip or CKC assigned breeder registration series tattoo.

Easiest thing to do is to re-chip the dog with an ISO chip if not already done so.

Liesje I have no idea, they probably have their own rules. If the dog is imported from USA to Germany, it would keep it's original registry. If the dog is *bred* in Germany and the puppies are to be SV registered, I believe the dog would have to have DNA done through the SV and would have to meet the SV requirements to be in their studbook (show card, HD/ED a-stamp, working title, etc).

Whiteshepherds Thanks, I didn't know that. If someone imports an AKC GSD into another FCI country is the registration transferred or are they all like the SV? It is just the SV that does breed surveys? (in the FCI, for GSD's)

Liesje If the dog was bred and born in the USA and is AKC registered, that should be all you need (maybe the certified 4 generation pedigree in addition to the registration certificate). You cannot send a dog to Germany and get it SV registered, doesn't work that way. They only register dogs bred/born in Germany. You can do a USCA-SV registration through the USCA, but as far as I know that is pretty pointless.

Exporting GSD's, Registration ?

I understand how transferring registrations works coming into the AKC, not sure how it works going in the other direction.

When you export an AKC GSD to Germany does the dog have to take part in a breed survey before it can get its FCI registration?

Not importing or exporting anything, just on a fact finding mission.
Thanks!
