Also, you are right about people having a bad rap about gsd. That's why I get embarrassed when he barks at people and they get scared, even though he is a big softty right now. I want to get him to not bark and behave good around people to show them the gsd are awesome dogs and not any thing they should be scared of.

It's one thing for your dog to alert you to someone at the door when you're on the other side of the house, its another thing for your dog to "alert" you to the guy walking down the sidewalk at you...I'm assuming you can see the guy anyways.

When its a young puppy...people think its cute. When its an 85lbs GSD, you'll quickly gain a reputation that you don't want. Each time you allow him to bark, you're reinforcing the behavior and he thinks that's what he's supposed to do.

My German is very aloof to people on the street. He basically doesn't even notice them. He knows they're there, but there is no response, negative or positive. He is trained though to bark at someone if I say a command, and also stop barking and return to heel once the "threat" has moved on.
That makes sense

BTW - I own a stable 'German'. He is non reactive. He is confident. He also trusts me to be the leader and feels no need to step into my role.
Oh, I'm not saying your wrong, if that's what you thought. I was just claiming back

Thank you for the "clarification!" That is very impressive. And sounds like reasonable prudent advise that JQP can achieve!

I wish Rocky could do that! But he really only barks at home..when folks come on the property. And by and large no one to bark at anyway! I had to work like a...dog!, to find people for him to ignore in my neighbor !
