My dog is 2, but I still crate her when I'm not home. ETA: She's not crated at night, she sleeps on my bed and never moves. Unfortunately. lol

Our dogs are 8 and 5 and they still sleep in their crates in our bedroom at night. It's not "crate training", it's just where they sleep, that's their beds. They love their crates and are often already in them at bedtime, waiting for me to come close the doors. They're not going to kill and eat us if we didn't do that, but none of us would sleep as well. Keefer likes to come poke his nose in my eye to make sure I haven't mysteriously vanished during the night, and neither of them would let me sleep in on non-work days. Now, they stay quietly in their crates until I get up, even if my husband gets up earlier, which he often does. Halo is crated at flyball practice and tournaments, and hotel rooms if we travel, which is typical for any dog sport. Having a dog that's comfortable hanging out in a crate is a great thing.

|scarfish||we're still going to keep training with this guy. he really is a decent trainer and my wife works with dogs and the classes are done at her job so our dogs can go for free. he's just more the type that says they are only dogs and they're basically here just to work for us. he's a little too militant with the dogs. we feel the opposite way, we have no kids and our dogs are like our kids. we really spoil the crap out of them. well, my wife does.|

anywho, thanks everyone! i thought there was something off with our trainer saying they need to be crate trained for 2 years. now i don't have to question myself!
scarfish buys everyone in the room a beer!

scarfish, maybe you need a rule refresher, psuedo swearing is not allowed.
I am in agreement with others opinion of your trainers idea that an uncrated dog is going to end up killing you in your sleep...
All my dogs are crate trained, I don't want a puppy getting into trouble if I'm not home. I want my dogs used to crates if they need to stay at the vets, need to be transported etc.
They get to a certain age where I trust them to be loose in the house and they are, but they are always willing to 'crate up' if they have to..

|Lilie||You got me wrong. I think you might have misunderstood the trainer. You might do well with discussing with him your concerns. You might find that it's just a misunderstanding.|
