I agree with Harley... I'd back off a bit and add the clicker. Much clearer for the dog so well worth the training we HUMANS take up to teach it

Personally, I don't think this was a good start. But you can change it!
Which training method do you use? It would be a lot easier with clicker training, in my personal opinion. You could try teaching your dog to give you eye contact, then he gets the ball.
I would use shaping in this case.
Keep the ball in your pocket until he gives the eye contact, then reward with the ball.

Training my dog to watch me over ball.
I have a male gsd that loves his ball. He will stare at it. He was at the trainers for 6 weeks and they trained him on the ball so you have to have the ball to make him watch you or walk good and sit stay lay down how do I make him watch me and listen to me if I don't have his ball?
